About
TYPA is a design centre for print and paper art where we display a host of historic presses and traditional techniques from papermaking to letterpress book printing. Old machinery is complemented by contemporary architectural paper objects and folded designs. Artists from all around the world work in the studio and display their works in the on-site gallery. As a visitor, you will be given a tour around the centre, during which you will be able to experience work both as a papermaker and a printer. We will take you 2000 years back in history and work our way back into the modern digital world. The tour is included in the price of the ticket, lasts for about 1-1,5 h and is suitable for kids as well as adults. In addition to the tour, we can host various workshops. Ask your tour guide for more information. In our shop corner, you can find a selection of journals and notebooks that we manufacture by hand and we also take custom orders for diaries and albums, as well as custom prints.

Great value and a great experience
My wife and I were a group of two who were treated to some 90 minutes of explanation (in English) about the history of the manufacture of paper and the development of printing machines . It was absolutely fascinating. It was also far cheaper than it deserved to be. I would have given it more than five stars were that a possibility.
Thank you for your thorough review for our tour and we're glad to hear you enjoyed your visit!

Interactive museum, stationery with a purpose
A really very informative and interactive experience. In addition to learning about the different machines, you get to make paper, stamp a postcard, and even cut a book. I really appreciated the mission of the museum in preserving memory and reusing discarded books.
Hi Annie, We're glad you enjoyed your visit to TYPA centre, hope to see you again when you're in Tartu!

A fascinating and friendly visitor experience.
Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, and clearly passionate about their museum and for sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm. So interesting learning about papermaking and great fun getting the chance to make our own. The collection of historic printing machines was really impressive and hearing about them was fascinating. A lovely selection of handmade notebooks etc. We hadn't heard of TYPA before visiting Tartu, but would love to go back.
Thank you for visiting as and we're glad to hear you enjoyed our tour! Next time when you're in town, come by for a workshop, we'll be happy to take you through the process of crafting a notebook, doing some linocuts and printing on T-shirts or teach the process of cyanotype printing! :)

We went to the museum expecting to look at old mashinery, was not expecting to get an amazing tour :)
Amazing museum, for what was included in the prise, would have paid more. The tour guide was great, the stories were informative, interesting and educational. Was surprised that the old machinery was working and we were able to see how everything works, and even try ourselves. 10/10 experience, would come back for a more detailed paper making or book making lesson :)
Hi Aleks Glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to TYPA centre! Hoping to see you again soon for a specialised course and teach you more about the secrets of print and paper making :)

    Amazing and practical museum experience
You get a guided tour through the museum and the guides are very fun and descriptive. You'd never think paper and printing is such an interesting rabbit hole. Additionally you can touch everything and make your own paper and print! 10/10 experience.
Thank you for your kind words and feedback! Please do come for another visit next time you're in town, perhaps even for a specialised course - we bet there's much further to go in the rabbit hole ;)

A great museum with hands on activities
We had a great guided tour of the printing museum with a very enthusiastic guide. You didn't need to book ahead. You need to follow the clear signs around the building to find the entrance. We enjoyed making our own paper and printing a card both of which were wrap up beautifully for us to take home. Seeing such a variety of working printing machines and type was fascinating.
It warms our hearts to hear such kind feedback, happy to hear you enjoyed your time with us at TYPA! :)

A museum where you take more than just new experiences home
Visiting TYPA is the museum experience one definitely needs. It's affordable, very hands on and Marko kindly answered all the questions we had. Due to visiting it for Restoration of Independence day, we also got to make banknote designs! We got to take home my own made paper, postcard and the banknotes. It also has the museum cat Ruby, who is very adorable. Overall, I think this place is a very nice experience to have and would definitely recommend visiting it, if you have the time and opportunity!
Hi Helmi, Thank you for your kind words, we'll be sure to pass on the praise to Marko from you and some warm pets to Ruby! Make sure to come by to say hi next time you're in town :)

    Amazing tour😊
An amazing tour where you will definitely learn something new. An excellent guide will not only tell you the history of paper making, but also let you try to make a sheet of paper yourself! We were impressed, we recommend to everyone!

    Calm afternoon with the kids
Fascinating museum with a hands on approach! Interesting for both the kids and adults. My 2yo, 6yo and 8yo enjoyed the visit immensely and claimed that they want their birthday party to be organised in Typa! I totally enjoyed the peaceful and calm atmosphere and the guide who made us feel warmly welcome!

we didn’t expect that the tickets would include a guided tour, but that was even better! plus you get to make your own paper, and then stamp a postcard. they also have a lovely tortoiseshell cat, so be careful if you have allergies, but give her a pat if you’re not! she might look grumpy, but she’s actually really sweet and wants nothing more than to sleep in your arms ❤️
they also sell handmade notebooks, secret book-boxes, shelf secret book-spines, postcards, seed paper, and even tote bags (at least for valentine’s they had some limited edition ones)

We had a great time. The guide was great, had a lot of interesting storys. It's great that we were able to try a lot of things. We had never seen anything like it. We visited many museums in Tartu, for us personally this museum is the second most interesting after AHHAA.

Excellent place, a bit of history, hands-on experience to make paper, use printing press and some other tools. Fun for kids even not knowing English/Estonian.
