About
Tartu Town Hall Square is the trapeze-shaped central square of Tartu, surrounded by classical buildings. The current town hall is the third building that has been erected to that spot. In the 18th century, the square was the location of the most important market in the city – der Grosse Markt, or the Great Market. Since 1998, it has been adorned by the fountain known as the Kissing Students. Every day, bells ring out from the tower of the Town Hall; its 18 bells were manufactured in the bell foundry in Karlsruhe, Germany, and 16 bells were cast for the 15th anniversary of bell-ringing at the Royal Eijsbouts Belfry in the Netherlands. A yellow National Geographic window erected in the Town Hall Square represents Tartu as one of the places in Southern Estonia worth discovering.

I can imagine that this is a lovely square at its best, but at the moment the kissing students statue and fountain has been removed for renovation and the town hall is inaccessible….

Tartu Town Hall Square is certainly a great public space, but as of June 2023 important parts are under construction in anticipation of the 2024 year as a Capital of European culture.

The square itself proceeds down a hillside (the slope is gentle) from the attractive former town hall (now a tourist information center) towards the river. The square is lined with shops and cafes. We were here on a Saturday night, and the square was alive and vibrant.

The construction is directly in front of the town hall, although it does not completely obscure it. We've posted photos. Most importantly, the "kissing students" castle, one of Tartu's most famous, is in storage pending completion of the project. The project does not affect the tilted art museum, which is towards the other end of the square. The museum leans at a greater angle than the Tower of Pisa in Italy.

If you are in Tartu, you will definitely want to come here. We stayed at the nearby Hotel Lydia, which is maybe 200 feet away and an excellent choice. If enjoying it without construction is your priority, or seeing the kissing students, I would contact the TI. In any case, it sounds like this square, and Tartu in general, will be a great place to visit in 2024.

When I visited, the Christmas tree and lights were still up. They had built an ice rink in front of the town hall and there were people skating. It was lively but not crowded. You can't come to Tartu without visiting!

Grab a pair of skates for €3 and hop on a free rink for a hour. Don't expect high-speed sporting, tho :p

A nice square. Visit, stand, look around, sit on a restaurant if you like. Nothing to lose just admiring the scene.

All roads lead from this square which is in the centre of Tartu and the impressive Town Hall occupies one side and is quite impressive with the famous kissing students statue in front. The Tourist Information Centre is there and the staff are very pleasant and helpful with lots of useful information.

The Town Hall square of Tartu is not the biggest square that could be, but it is charming with its beautiful Town Hall in the backdrop and the long cobblestone street hosting bars and restaurants facing it. It is a charming space.

The water fountain in front of it also has its charm.

In all, this is the only real place of interest, a lovely wide square with its old and reproduction buildings recently built

It was my second time in Tartu. I love the atmosphere, the active life with all the young people (student city) and the cleanliness. Just watch were you walk as the street is quite un-even.
