About
Tartu Town Hall Square is the trapeze-shaped central square of Tartu, surrounded by classical buildings. The current town hall is the third building that has been erected to that spot. In the 18th century, the square was the location of the most important market in the city – der Grosse Markt, or the Great Market. Since 1998, it has been adorned by the fountain known as the Kissing Students. Every day, bells ring out from the tower of the Town Hall; its 18 bells were manufactured in the bell foundry in Karlsruhe, Germany, and 16 bells were cast for the 15th anniversary of bell-ringing at the Royal Eijsbouts Belfry in the Netherlands. A yellow National Geographic window erected in the Town Hall Square represents Tartu as one of the places in Southern Estonia worth discovering.

Grab a pair of skates for €3 and hop on a free rink for a hour. Don't expect high-speed sporting, tho :p

A nice square. Visit, stand, look around, sit on a restaurant if you like. Nothing to lose just admiring the scene.

All roads lead from this square which is in the centre of Tartu and the impressive Town Hall occupies one side and is quite impressive with the famous kissing students statue in front. The Tourist Information Centre is there and the staff are very pleasant and helpful with lots of useful information.

The Town Hall square of Tartu is not the biggest square that could be, but it is charming with its beautiful Town Hall in the backdrop and the long cobblestone street hosting bars and restaurants facing it. It is a charming space.

The water fountain in front of it also has its charm.

It was my second time in Tartu. I love the atmosphere, the active life with all the young people (student city) and the cleanliness. Just watch were you walk as the street is quite un-even.

The Town Hall Square or Raekoja Plats is the place to go to appreciate the history of Tartu, Estonia's second city and home to its famous University. Tartu like Tallinn has an OId Town and a modern one, with Town Hall Square being the heart and soul of the Old Town. Buildings such as The Leaning House (1793 ) and the Kissing Students statue adorn this picturesque area which leads you into the University campus. The Town Hall ( post 1775 ) itself houses the Information Centre ( side entrance ) where you should pick up the pamphlet 'Strolls in Tartu' which will give you an excellent insight into this classicist city's history and you can follow all or parts of its recommended routes. Highly recommended and enjoy.

There are many helpful comments here already and I would only add my support to the positive reviews. However, if you are visiting Tartu from March 2019 onwards you might be interested in the photographic display on the Kaarsild (Arch Bridge) at the bottom of the Raekoja Plats and over the River Emajõgi. The Vanemuine Ballet is celebrating their 80th Anniversary and has mounted a set of stunning and original photos by Teater Vanemuine's official photographer, Maris Savik, on the bridge. They present the dancers in interesting locations around Tartu and in unusual aspects of their lives. For instance there are two skateboarders, a guitarist and two dancer-mums with their children.
