Lively and pleasent exoperience
Aug 2021
Not too big, but very lively old city, actually it gives impression that Tartu itself is way bigger than it is, with almost capital city vibes with it's streets bustling with people walking around, sitting in cafes etc.. Maybe it was partly due to that we were visiting during wine and food festival it was not crowded just lively and natural. We were coming from a bigger city with it's own old town , but ours paled in comparison to Tartu and looked like devoid of much life and activities. Sure we also have our own summer festival when city regains some life, but again it sometimes looked more crowded and forced than that we had in Tartu - Tartu one was just natural, and not seemed like a one-off activity of the year after which city goes to slumber for another year. maybe it is just tourist's perspective but we liked the vide of the town.

Beautiful
Jul 2021
Lovely place to visit - with its cobbled streets, green parks and vital nightlife there is a little bit to do or see for everyone. Love architecture ? There is some fantastic buildings to see. Love nature? Botanical garden, parks will be for you. Want some nightlife? Done! With Tartu being a student town there are enough nightlife opportunities.

We were sure that we know each part of Tartu old city, but our guide showed us a whole area behind it and we were pleasantly surprised! Visit to Tartu is a really interesting historical journey!

Beautiful and charming

We loved Tartu Old Town - it is very vibrant, lovely, neat and full of cafes and bars. On Friday we were lucky to listen to some concert (orchestra, that played just on the street) and on Saturday-Sunday we observed beach volleyball tournament in the main town hall.

A great place to spend the day wandering the cobblestone streets, enjoying a coffee or dinner. Have your camera as you will be inspired to snap, snap, snap.

The old town that never gets old
Nov 2019 • Couples
Estonia overall is a beaty in the autumn. So is the old town of Tartu. The Tilted house, the remains of the church with the museum there is so much to see. It was bombarded to a bare minimum during ww2 yet it looks like its never had any trouble.
For foreign visitors the landmarks are marked with information in English and German. For me Tartu is a at least 3 day trip. The old town, the National museum, the toy museum, the science centre "Ahhaa". I am waiting for the next summer season for my fourth trip there.

worth visiting for a day
Aug 2019
nice place to visit and it is very easy to get round and there is also plenty to see but you can pack it all in one day. take a walk along the river and take time to sit and watch life going by. the main square is very lovely with the fountain which has the ' the kissing students' and a also a huge yellow photo frame for you to take some great shots. the gardens are worth having a stroll and also before you go do some research on the statues in the park as it is interesting. st johns church is worth seeing as they also have their leaning tower of pisa. lots of shops and places to eat.

Compact and cozy

Tartu is a place where most people stop just for a day and it is so convenient that the Old City is easy to walk in a few hours. Make sure you walk up the Toome hill and find magnificent ruins of medieval cathedral and on the way back visit Werner Caffee.

Historic city which is easy to explore
Sep 2019 • Couples
Tartu is considered the intellectual centre of Estonia as it is home to the oldest and most renowned university, the University of Tartu founded in 1632, the main building of which has a distinctive neoclassical facade and contains an art museum with an impressive collection of plaster casts plus Egyptian antiquities and other works.

Tartu itself probably dates from the 11th century. St John's Church dates back to the 14th century and there may have been a wooden church here in the 12th century.

Much of the town was destroyed in the 18th century first when the Russians invaded and then in a series of fires, including the Great Fire of Tartu in 1775, and most of the town was rebuilt between 1782 and 1789, giving the centre its current character, with one building having a lean greater than the Cathedral Tower in Pisa, and in which the Tartu Art Museum is located.

The centre of the city is Raekoja Plats with the Town Hall and Information Office at the top, in front of which is the statue of 'The Kissing Students' (Mati Karmin 1998), one of several statues in the Old City.

Not as impressive as Old Tallinn of course but this place is awesome to check out none the less. Easy to walk around as is flat. Heaps to do along the river as well.
