Good backdrop for photos.
This is an easy walk from the cruise ship docks.
This is co-located with the old town so you see this while enroute.

The walls surround the whole old town of Tallinn. The best parts were near Kiek in de Kök museum. The walls were in pretty great shape. You could spend hours staring at them and walking aroung the old town.

Walking about alongside the contour of the city's wall is really awe-inspiring! Be sure to visit the parks around the wall to get the full depth of the wall. Winter visits are also incredible!

The city has probably the longest intact town walls of any other city. I understood that this was so because the city lacked the funds to remodel the layout of the city. Our gain! So many to see.

The town wall here is about the most amazing I have ever seen. Large sections are intact and the stone towers with their pretty red tops are stunning.

Constructed and developed over centuries, the predecessors to todays enclosures were constructed from local limestone in the latter half of the 13th century. Tallinn’s current city walls reached a peak of effectiveness and continuity in the 1500’s, comprising 40 towers and an outer moat; artillery demanded new, squat constructions such as Kiek-in-de-kok over the earlier tall, thin columns. As the years progressed the defensive fortifications gradually became obsolete, and only about half of the towers and an equal amount of wall remains.

Girding the Old Town, the towers vary in their roles, from housing museums (the maritime museum in Fat Margaret) to providing access to the ramparts above (Nun’s Tower) to, well, just being a decorative tower (on either side of the Viru gate). I visited various parts of the walls either while seeing a museum inside or as a dedicated stopover to see the wall itself. There are ten excellent metal storyboards at various locations, giving thorough descriptions of the applicable site of the wall or tower in English. A detailed diorama in the City Museum shows the intact fortifications at their peak.

In summary, the city walls are equally impossible to miss and difficult to find. It’s tough to make sense of this attraction in its entirety because it is so spread out over a large area and would take the better part of a day or more to process. If you have several days to spare in Tallinn by all means pay attention to your surroundings and you will be rewarded with excellent views and innumerable historical anecdotes.

The museum inside the towers of the walls was interesting and there were some good photo ops from the walls too. It is well worth a few hours of your time. I thought the "haunted" tower with the information on Tallinn's psychic/paranormal clubs of the 1920s and 30s was unique.
