This funny name perhaps came after its shape or its cannon. It’s one of 26 bastions of the town wall. It was built in 1500s originally served to protect the port, but later it became gunpowder and weapon warehouse and prison. The diameter of the building is 25 metres and its height is about 20m, its walls are 4,4-6 metres thick. We visited it and took lots of photos. Nowdays it’s the Estonian Maritime Museum building. It was closed so we couldn’t go in, but it’s worth to see it outside, too.

The tower contains the maritime museum which is very good with a lot of interactive displays that always make a museum more interesting. You can also see the interior of the tower and get access to the roof garden for more wonderful views of the city.

Walking around Tallinn on our cruise ship port stop , we were hoping to visit the KGB jail ( closed on Monday. However we were very close to Fat Margaret, and went inside to inspect.
Its an unique building to house the maritime exhibits, and it is spread over 4 /5 floors, each specific to a different era/ age. On the ground floor his is a 700 year old wreck on display as well as a number of artefacts.
The displays are very well laid out , and a great deal of digital and hands on exhibits. We also went to the rooftop where there is a bar/cafe. An ideal spot to take in the panoramic views of the harbour and the old town.
The cost per adult was 15 Euros ( about £25 for a couple) and we thought it was good value.
When you go outside and to the right of the arches - there is an interesting bunker - a relic of the Russian occupation ? Out side the

This museum is one of the two locations of the Maritime Museum. We had already visited the Sea Plane Harbour before visiting the Fat Margaret location.

The museum has a very interesting layout, taking the visitors through naval history, with a different period highlighted on each floor. Starting in the middle ages and ending in the present, the museum gives you a very good impression of the changes in shipping technology.

Even if you're not primarily interested in naval history, the interactive and informative displays could easily keep you entertained for 1-2 hours.

The building is medieval and looks fantastic. The exposition is a part of Maritime Museum and there are a lot of ship models. If you a ship fan, you could spend there 3-4 hours.

Beautiful building from the inside. Usually we just see it from outside at the entrance of the Old Town. But worth a visit, the exposition is very well presented and gives us a lot of information about the history of shipping in Estonia.

The medieval Fat Margaret Tower and the Great Coastal Gate next to it were built to defend the city from the seaward side of town.

The tower was completed in 1530. The round tower has a diameter of 25 meters and a height of 20 meters. The walls are 5 meters thick.

After the two-year renovation of the Fat Margaret Tower and the Great Coastal Gate, the Estonian Maritime Museum was opened here in November 2019.

From the tower's rooftop, you have panoramic views of the Tallinn harbor and Old Town.

The Fat Margaret Tower as an original part of the Estonian Maritime Museum was opened after the total renovation on November 28, 2019. And it’s really worth visiting it, if you interested in the topic. Plan at least 1,5 hours just for the exposition.

I stayed in room 109 as a single room. With en suite. The room was a good size and was exceptionally clean. The decor was slightly tired but the hostel is extremely well priced and good safe facilities. The location is perfect for easy access to the city and the port. Less than 10 minutes each way. The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful and English was perfect. I would highly recommend. Was an incredibly safe and well run Hostel.
