- hala a2 contributionsOne of the best attractions in TallinnOur experience was amazing. We had a guided tour of the pharmacy. The guide was very knowledgeable and she answered all our questions enthusiastically. After that we had a fun workshop in the celler of the pharmacy were we created herbal tea. The guide explained the differente benefits of each herb and how they were used hundreds of years ago. We also got to try their delicious mulled wine. The tour and the workshop lasted for around 1.5 hours and was very affordable (10€ /person). I highly recommend visiting the pharmacy and booking the tour.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 February 2023

It is free to enter, very nice th at they have the museum telling the History of the place. They also have some examples of things which used to be used in the manufacturing of medicine back then such as frogs and bats. You can spend 10-20 minutes here reading the information on walls.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 11 April 2023

This over-hyped pharmacy is just a very dated pharmacy store with some lovely displays. There's nothing more to it, other than its so-called "old world charm".

What I particularly liked was that this historic pharmacy is also still a working business, despite the tourists coming in looking at the small free museum room. Fascinating in a slightly ghoulish way ( beware the cabinet including such historical “cure” ingredients as dried toad, stallions’ hooves and a mummy hand!).

What a delightful find opposite the Town Hall in Old Town Tallinn. As well as still operating (since 1422) as a Pharmacy it is also a free to enter museum of a wonderful display of ‘old cures’. Look up when inside the old beams on the ceiling are beautiful.

The famous Raeapteek pharmacy is located in the Main Square in a nice old building. It’s opened in1422, so it’s the oldest pharmacy in Europe. They sold „love potions” and „care all” made of dried frog legs, black cat's blood or pike eye, as we knew in the little „museum”. The history of the building itself is also interesting and shows the cosmopolitan character of the city. It was founded by a German doctor: Johann Molner, who sold it to a Hungarian family in 1580 and they owned it for about 300 years. I think it’s an interesting place, it’s worth a visit.

This is a little corner everyone should peek into while downtown. It is the oldest pharmacy in the area. While it is still a working drug store, there is a small museum room with antidotes of days long gone by. There are explanations, historical documents, and sample of old treatments. The attraction is free. The room is small and entry might be delayed. It doesn't take long so stop and add it to your things accomplished.

Ahhhh yes, here we go. A race for the oldest in anything is bound to create controversy and stir up passions in tourists who use visits to these place as badges of honor. It’s safe to say that consensus is that this medicinal dispensary has been operating in the same location since 1422, making this year its 600th anniversary. The majority of that time the business was under control of the Burchart family, who ran it for over 300 years and whose coat of arms is displayed over the entrance. Entrance is free.
It’s tough to tell where the real pharmacy ends and the museum begins, although most would agree that the latter simply spills over a little bit into the first room. Real pharmacists and cashiers greet you at the entrance and obviously fulfill the needs (and prescriptions) of locals who patronize them. While there are a few historical artifacts in the first room, it’s really in the rear that the museum comes alive. Innumerable examples of medications (arranged chronologically), weighing/preparation instruments, base ingredients, and medicinal directions (“Dried toads must be hanged below the ceiling against the plague.”) are present throughout. An electronic display reviews the history of the museum starting in the mid-1800’s. Miscellaneous souvenirs are for sale in the main room as well.
In summary, this was an interesting if eccentric view into the history of medications, especially for those of us in health care. Like many attractions in the the Old Town, the structure itself is historical and creates a museum-in-a-museum effect if that makes sense. My only small quibble was that in its entirety it didn’t quite tell a coherent story but that’s certainly understandable given the space constraints and breadth of material. Overall, though, it was a unique glimpse into the past and great way to spend an hour. Highly recommended.
