Good overview of Estonian History
Sep 2021
We enjoyed our visit to the Great Guild Hall. The building itself is impressive and the exhibitions within are very modern and easily accessible to foreign tourists.

I particularly liked the exhibits in the basement and even the numismatic collection was presented in a very interesting way. Overall, it's a good introduction to Estonian history and their very own brand of sarcastic humor. Well worth a visit.

not well organized
Jul 2020
Not bad, but not really good. The building is impressive, but the museum is not as well organized as the other muiseums in Tallinn. You can get an impression, but if you are more interested in the history of Tallinn, there are better museums. Not relly a must

Another museum in Tallinn worth visiting. Great to see the trading history of the town and the stories with it.

Worth visiting
Nov 2019
We visited this local history museum with many interesting artifacts outlining the early history of Tallinn and housed in the beautiful old Guild Hall with great cellars. The video which was showing in one of the rooms was also quite informative.

Nice but not very interactive museum
Nov 2019
This is a nice museum, covering history of Estonia. You will find out some interesting facts about Estonia during your visit. However, for the price of the ticket, I would expect something more interesting, more interactive, more fun as well. Mostly, there is just a lot of reading.

I should have allowed more time
Nov 2019
I came to this museum (Estonian History Museum) about one hour before closing time thinking it couldn't be large since it was located in just a single building (The Great Guild Hall). It was a bad mistake. The museum was definitely worth more than one hour. As a result I only viewed the exhibits on the ground floor and only managed to do a very quick walk-around of the other floors.

So, this review is only of the main floor.

Not many material exhibits, so it relies a great deal on videos, but in the process, does a good job of telling a story. Since recorded history did not extend further back than 1200s, except for some exhibits re prehistoric archaeological finds, all the curation is about the different periods of Danish, German barons, Swedish and Russian rule. You will learn a lot about Estonian history here.

Housed in an old building (very interesting in itself) in the lower old town a short distance from the town hall, a great vaulted room. Not a lot of space, but well utilized.

Entry 8 euros. Free with Tallinn card. Needs 2 hours.

In the center of the town
Aug 2019
Admissions fee required, in the heart of old town Tallinn. There are musicians playing outside to make a living. Interesting architecture.

Interesting building
Sep 2019
We looked around in here, its history was fascinating. sadly I could not manage steps upstairs but did manage to go down into the basement. they had a very ancient central heating system .obviously a bonus with ther winters. Interesting artwork in the shop/cafe area, sat and had an icecream here.

Thank you for your visit! And unfortunately yes - as the building is medieval (1410), it is a bit difficult to climb the stairs.

Came across by chance
Sep 2019
We came across this museum during our wanderings and it was well worth a visit to give us some idea of the history of Tallinn and Estonia. The museum is housed in what was a guild hall and the displays have lots of pertinent information in English. It was not busy when we visited and we were able to take our time and enjoy what was on offer.

Estonian History Museum
Sep 2019
Enjoyed getting a better understanding of Estonian history and culture. All displays have good detailed English translations of items and related history/knowledge. Upstairs is a brightly lit large room with layout meant for random exploration, while downstairs shows construction of the Great Guild Hall that this museum inhabits as well as more specific collections of various weapons and armour from different wars and military campaigns involving Estonia.
