About
The Estonian History Museum´s renovated Maarjamäe Palace opened to mark the 100-year anniversary of the Republic of Estonia. The palace with its grand steps leading down to the sea shore was built in 1874 as a summer manor for the count Orlov-Davydov on the grounds of a former sugar factory. Later is operated as a restaurant and aviation school. During the soviet period it was used as communal apartments and in 1987 it was extended and became the History and Revolution Museum. Nowadays it is a part of Estonian History Museum. Maarjamäe Palace´s large scale exhibition "My Free Country" was opened in 2018. One can also find here the Childrens Republic - playful learning environment specifically designed for the children. There are temporary exhibitions, museum shop and a restaurant located in the palace. In former summer hall one can see Evald Okas´large mural "Friendship of Nations" (1987)- one of the few monumental paintings from Soviet periord survived in its original location.

Great display. I didn't think it would take so long Also got free audio. The temporary exhibition was also very good. I also became smarter about the film museum, as well as about glass works.

In a really beautiful building is this wonderful museum highlighting Estonia's Independence from Russia, both times. Well worth time spent viewing their struggle.

The visit began with an amusing video on the history of the palace. The main exhibition on level 2 " MY free country" takes visitors through 100 years from the Birth of the Republic of Estonia to the present days. Parts of it are quite harrowing, but it is never boring. We spent two hours viewing ths exhibition alone, though there is also a film museum and stables. At the back of the palace there is a fascinating exhibition of statues from the Soviet period.

We only walked in a park as it was so early that it wasn’t open yet. Impressive collection of Lenin and other Sovjet time statues behind the palace. Really nice buildings with different styles combined.

This is a very interesting and nice museum about recent (1900+) Estonian history. I did not have time to finish the main exposition because there is so much to see I plan to return and visit the museum of cinema and pop music.

The castle is nicer from outside than inside. The view from the entrance is to Tallinn Bay, this was lovely. The whole garden and area is a great place for a walk on a sunny day. It's small tho. We went to see the Eurovision song contest museum at the same time, this was very boring and pointless.
Posting a photo of my fav moment.

Thank you for visiting Maarjamäe History Centre! I am glad that you found some positive moments in Maarjamäe, it is really beautiful here. But we don´t have Eurovision song contest museum - it is a pop-up exhibition inside the main exhibition "Sound of Freedom. The Story of Estonian Popular Music".

Average museum. But if you are traveling with children, you may wish to make a short visit to museum and have good time in the playground, located between palace and stables. In stables is located very unusul exhibition, devoted to Estonian artists of popular music during the Soviet occupation

Thank you for your comment. In Maarjamäe Palace one can find "The Childrens Republic" which is a playful learning environment designed for children aged 5 to 12.

The hole area with museums is worth of visit speacilly for families with young kids. Kids can play outdoor, plenty to explore at the museums and the restaurant is ok too in the main building but there is also possibility to eat your own food at the garden. Very nice destination!

10 minutes from the city centre, on the hill with a wonderful sea view. The whole manor complex is very well renovated. There are 3 exhibitions: in the mansion - Estonian history, in the old stable - Estonian film history and the third gives you Estonian pop music history.
The mansion gives a very good idea about Estonian history and all the periods with loads of items. The mansion itself has a colourful history... One can have a lunch in the restaurant, first opened in 1933.
Behind the mansion there are some political sculptures from the nightmare soviet era.

This museum provides an excellent introduction to Estonian history. I enjoyed the special exhibit for the centenary of Estonian independence. Don;t miss the sculpture garden in the back which provides a resting place for the torn-down Soviet monuments.
Highly recommended.
