About
In Soviet time Hotel Viru was good enough to accommodate foreigners. It also had to be good enough for the KGB ... The museum represents a collection of the stories of two worlds. In one of them, mostly existing on paper, happy Soviet people enjoyed a life of plenty and friendship, led by a single wise political party. The other world – the real one – had a nature much more diverse and complicated.

Brilliant, I was not really thinking this could be interesting, but the guide really brought this to life and made it interesting. I would recommend if you get the chance.

Brilliant tour and learnt so much for the tour guide. Everything was so authentic and eye opening - the highlights of the trip!

Small museum with displays of dungeon-like rooms where KGB conducted interrogations during Soviet era. Staff were passionate about Estonian history.

I was really disappointed with this tour - the history of the hotel is fascinating and the tour guide was funny and engaging but the tour was only about 30 minutes long, very short! There is a lot of plaques with information to read but we didn’t get a chance to read it as we were rushed out - it would have been nice to have 15 minutes or so to have a read, especially when it says the tour lasts an hour on the website! There are only 2 rooms to see. The tour was €12 a head, which is VERY overpriced! For the length of the tour and the size of the “museum”, I think €5 or €6 would be a reasonable price. I felt pretty ripped off, it’s a shame because I was really looking forward to this tour - visit the KGB cells or the Vabamu museum instead which cover similar topics but in much more detail and at a better price

The museum itself is small - 2 rooms, with pictures and artefacts in the corridors outside. But what makes this is the guide.
She started with the building of the hotel and the reasons behind it, and was full of information on the history of the hotel, its workers and the role of the KGB within it, including drawing on personal stories.
The artefacts are original ones, in the original state they were found.
The tour was around an hour and a half, which was mainly the guide talking to us about the different aspects, so we thought good value for money for that.

It would have been useful to have more information beforehand eg we made our way upstairs and were then told the meeting point was in the hotel lobby.
Also, make sure you book tickets beforehand to be on the safe side.

We were left disappointed. Tour guide was good but we thought the museum itself would have been a little larger. Got to see more of the views than the KGB Museum.

I was really looking forward to this, but was very disappointed. It had the potential to be so much better, the guide was good but you only get to see 2 very small rooms. Vastly overpriced for what you get.

The museum itself was okay, but the tour guide was amazing. She was able to give a lot of detail and perspective that you don’t get elsewhere - even on other tours in Tallinn. She was able to draw on personal experiences and stories of her family and friends throughout the soviet era and onward to really add a lot of depth to the tour. She was open to all questions and took her time to explain everything with context!

Good insight provision of the way Intourist hotels in the USSR have been designed for purpose. Tje tapping of KGB agents is part of that

It was a very interesting visit, and I learned a lot about Tallinn during the Soviet occupation. Both from the hotel view, but also in general.
The exhibitions aren’t that interesting. You go there to listen to the guide.
And would go.
