The best place to go in the summer while in Lithuania. Full of everything one would need except affordable accommodation, the Curonian Spit is it's own little isolated world within Lithuania. Beaches, German bunkers and pill boxes, forests, touristy little towns and plenty of wind!

Everything you need
Aug 2020
Walking and bike routes, beaches, sea museum and dolphin shows, the longest sea bridge I've ever seen, bunkers hidden in the forest - everybody can find something interesting.

Beautiful , clear beach with white sand!

There are definitely days that could be spent on Curonian spit. I explored only part of Smiltyne for a little. Taking small leaps and trails into the nature, having a walk by the shore of the beach, this place has its magic and yet it it sooo close to the city, it totally feels like into a deep nature when you walk a bit off the ferry terminal.

Hmmmm. It's ok but...
Jul 2020 • Couples
Do all your research about this before you go. What you can do and where you can go is tightly restricted and rightly so. It's expensive to take a car to nida. €13 return on the ferry and €30 for road tolls. Only camping is in nida, 45km of bumpy tarmac. We had hoped to fatbike on the Baltic beach but it's controlled.... And a protected area. Only ferry is vente nida. Nothing from klaipeda.
So it's an "ok", not great, ok.

But.. epic food in juodkrante opposite the sports centre...

This far I have travelled it by bike for two times. Once in stormy October 2017 and once in summer. It is absolutely breathtaking.

A Miracle of Nature
Oct 2019
Heading from Liepaja to Kaunas by car, we decided to detour, lunch in Klaipeda, and spend the afternoon in this ravishingly beautiful natural wonder.

The short ferry ride dropped us on a spit of land stretching north from the closed Russian enclave in the former East Prussia to almost touch Lithuania at Klaipeda. This unique narrow strip offers many types of natural beauty with distinct experiences on the bay side and the side facing the Baltic Sea. Shifting sand dunes, lovely beaches, pine forests, hills to climb with magnificent views in all directions crowned by those startlingly beautiful Baltic clouds, wildlife galore, and, for a change of pace, the opportunity to glimpse the Russian border, complete with armed guards.

The Spit also has several villages with lots of charm, inns, restaurants and vacation homes. The main one is Nida toward the southern end of the Spit.

We visited in the off-season, so we avoided the crowds, but enjoyed unseasonably pleasant weather. We drove and stopped to walk in various places, but were left wishing we had more time. Time to be captured by the relaxed seaside pace, time to hike or bike deeper into the abundant beauty, and time to breathe more of that ever so fresh air.

What started as a spontaneous, quick detour, became one of the most memorable stops on our Baltic journey.

60mile of natural beauty

A small ride on/off ferry gets you to the Curonian Spit, there are many things to see on this spit of land. You have many beaches down on the Baltic side which actually add up to one long beach.. on the other side you have Dead Dunes and the shifting dunes, both are accessible with some boardwalks in place, they are well worth a visit.
If you like a forest walk stop at the little town of Juodkrante, there is a lovely walk through the forest called Hill of Witches following all kinds of wood carvings, ghoulish but fun. Have a meal or break in the town of Nida which is at the bottom of the spit which is lovely place with its colourful houses.
Well worth a good day on the Spit.

Blue flag beaches

Very clean, white sand beaches. You can find nude and separate for male and female. That's wonderful to enjoy your natural body in natural surroundings.

Place from a fairytale
Nov 2019
I enjoyed ferry trip to the place, even so it was cold and windy weather, there is a roof deck on the ferry, also there is a machine with hot drinks and soup. The park itself is very beautiful, take trekking shoes to see more and breath fresh air. I saw people who was fishing, and even there is a small sauna, after which you can sweem in the baltic sea.
