This impressive old building is on the corner of the Marianske square. As I know nowadays it’s the workplace of the mayor of the city. In the representative rooms the City Council holds their meetings and wedding ceremonies take place. We saw one of them during our visit.

On the initiative of the Mayor Vojtech Tvrdý, a museum was created here in 1942, divided into two parts: the history of the town and its surroundings and an exhibition of tinkers’ craft. The Town Hall became a centre of social life. According to the press at the time, thanks to the museum not only domestic but also foreign visitors used to go there. According to memories of Jozef Nižňanský, most tourists were from Croatia, for whom tinkers’ craft was an entirely unknown concept. The museum was in the town hall until the end of World War II. Later, it briefly served as a museum repository and after 1948, it was transferred to Budatín Castle.

The historic building of Žilina's Old Town Hall is on the corner of Mariánské náměstí and is one of the city's most valuable cultural monuments. On the side of the building there is a commemorative plaque of the Privileges for Slavis - an important historical document which, for the first time in history, mentions Slovaks as a separate ethnic group. The privilege was granted by King Louis I in 1381. The modern element of the town hall is the carillon installed in the 1990s. Today, the building of the old town hall is the seat of the mayor of Žilina, and also a place of occasional organization
