Old world museum. However, it had a beautiful bonnet exhibition. It helped me to better understand the history of women wearing bonnets.

Philosophically Mingei - A Must See!
Apr 2017 • Solo
Mingei is a Japanese term for "handcrafted art of the ordinary people". This branch of the Slovak National Museum contains a collection that rivals any world class city. I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect when I read the other postings and as I drove through the small industrial town of Martin, relying totally on GPS. Found the building, no problem. By itself the Soviet edifice wasn't inviting in the least, nor was the entry foyer. However the hospitality of the staff was genuine and warm. The quality of presentation and contents are exceptional! If you're looking for a good understanding of folk art from wood carving to weaving, from folk costumes to porcelain this is the place. The permanent exhibits stand on their own. The temporary exhibits during my visit, most specially the history of bag pipes in Slovakia - who knew - AMAZING!

Must see if you're in Martin

This place has really interesting expositions from older years. You'll find there a lot of old tools and things that people used for life. Quite interesting! If you happen to be in Martin, make sure you visit this place.

Excellent view back in time of local history

I visited with 2 teenage boys on a very rainy day as a time filler . I was pleasantly surprised with the museum and its contents and it gave a varied look at several aspects of Slovakian life . Perhaps more surprising there where no compliants from the teenagers ! They found it as interesting as I did and we stayed longer than expected . The English speaking staff where most helpful and helped us enjoy all displays . This is NOT suitable for wheelchair users or those with poor mobility, lots of stairs NO lifts

Excellent folk museum with over 100 historic buildings

For the most part, this is self-guided tour (guidebooks in English available), but we also had a very fine docent/volunteer who opened some of the locked buildings for us. She was charming. Very much enjoyed getting to see this historic look at farm life. Baby goats were fun to watch, too. There is a snack bar; a school tour of children was enjoying their home-cooked sandwiches. It's a very welcoming place and situated beautifully in a forest followed by meadows.

Situated in a historical building which is a jewel by itself, this ethnographic museum is a nice way to spend couple of hours...it is very interesting for kids too.
