About
The special attraction of this former spa is the famous geyser of Herlany. In the 1870s, an artesian well was drilled here in pursue of another mineral water source for the expanding spa. The 404.5 m deep probe brought up a strong spring of the mineral water. Now the periodicity of emanation is about 32-34 hours. The water springs for about 20-30 minutes to the height of maximum 20 metres.

It's worth it! Relaxing picnic in the park or adventurous hike to nearby mountains? It has it all!
Mar 2021
I have a few things and tips for future visitors to say about this place.
(My tips are for the time when there is no global pandemic happening)

First of all, it's my home village - I grew up here and left when I started university. I often come back for short visits and I can just say, there is SO MUCH POTENTIAL. The place has a history worth mentioning - it was once a Europe famous spa in 19th century and it got destroyed during WWII. After that it never returned to the famous spa (or even just spa) state.

Right now, it's a super nice and quiet place to stay for a while. The geyser is a spectacular experience, or so I've heard, haha. For me it was part of life, growing up there and playing with other kids in the park, we saw so many eruptions of geyser I couldn't even count it all.

TYPE OF TRAVEL:
If you are a family, definitely come here, bring blankets and food. You can have super nice picnic here, kids can play around on the grass and you can just relax in the shadows of the huge trees.

If you are a couple, it's very nice and romantic place to spend the afternoon. Again, picnic material!

If you are solo traveling, this is a nice stop on your bike or hike adventure.

WHAT TO DO (beside waiting for geyser):

/Rankovske skaly rocks/
This place happen to be 1-hour hike away, the rocks offer marvelous views of the region and the hike is not difficult at all. It's a natural reservation with communities of rare and endangered plant species.

/Fortress/
It's located 2 km away from Herlany in forest-covered hill of the Hradisko elevation point. It was originated as an aristocratic residence in the second half of 13th century.

/Male Brdo/
Another nature reserve, the slopes are built of andesite, it's full of well-preserved natural communities. Definitely your next favourite oak-wood oasis.

/Slanske vrchy mountains/
Even though they are not High Tatras, they are still pretty good. The mountains are of volcanic origin and they are notable for their rich mining activity and world famous Dubnik opal gems. Near Herlany area there can be found common opals and fleshy opals. There are many castle ruins, castles and archaelogical excavations of European importance throughout Slanske vrchy. Other nearby hills that you can hike from Herlany are Mosnik, Lazy and Makovica.

WHERE TO EAT AND SLEEP:

/Restaurant in the park/
There are preserved buildings in the park that are protected as a historical monuments. They are partially reconstructed spa objects and now serve as a restaurant and acommodation facilities. The whole area of the park is owned by Technical University in Kosice.

The said restaurant + hotel serve mostly as a wedding or ball venue, it's a place for huge family gatherings, cultural events, or TUKE events etc. - it DOES NOT work as your usual restaurant, you have to reserve the venue in advance.

BUT!! If you are a tourist and not their guest, you can still order coffee at the reception when the terrace outside of the main building is open.

If they don't have a huge wedding or kids camp going on, the rooms are available to book. Or you can try airbnb!

/Shop, grocery store/
There is your usual little village shop, grocery store three minutes outside of the park. (Behind the church, up the road and to the right.)

/Pub/
Local pub is situated right next to the grocery store, they serve beer and other beverages and usually they even make pizza and stuff.

/snack bar on the parking lot/
It looks quite bad and they only serve drinks and snacks. It's usually open from May until October.

____

I'm putting 4 stars, because it has so much potential and so many things to improve! Since February 2021 and for the upcoming months of the year there is a reconstruction planned for the park and geyser area. There should be a new playground for kids and hopefully a café, too.

Our first family geysir and we really enjoy it. We have to wait about one hour until it starts, but it was amazing to see such a power of nature. It's really worth a trip and waiting

Be amazed!

This was my first geyser. And it was worth the waiting for the spectacle!
The geyser was about 30 minutes late... it was already 11:25pm when it started, but the are was nicely lit.
The whole event took about 20 minutes.
Be aware of the road to Herľany. We traveled from Vranov nad Topľou and it was horrible and scary. The road is badly damaged with huge holes... But it is manageable if you drive slowly and carefully.

The main point of my visit to Slovakia was to see where my father was born over one hundred years ago. Sadly, the geyser was being repaired but the one photo I had of my cousin, was taken in front of the geyser. I loved going to Herlany.

Nice park
Aug 2015
Unfortunately we missed the actual eruption on our visit, but the park around is a nice place to relax and wait I imagine. There is a Penzion right next to the fountain if you want to sleep nearby to be sure not to miss it.

Unique natural place
Oct 2014 • Friends
Geyser is phenomenon because it require a specific set of conditions to occur. The current eruption intervals are between 32 - 34 hours, with the water reaching a height of 15 meters. The eruption lasts approximately 20 minutes and has temperature is 14 – 18 °C and its water is strongly mineralized, what you can smell during the eruption.
Geyser is located in nice park, where you can have a nice chill :) Also you can have a small walk around. If you are looking for a calm place, definitely recommended.
