Enormous effort was required to preserve at least part of this historic burial ground of a once important Jewish community. Both vast engineering feats and political persuasion were needed against the encroachment of a highway project and Communist disinterest.

This memorial is built at the place of a 17th. century Jewish cemetery. It is the burial place and memorial of Moses Sofer who was a leading orthodox rabbi in the 19th. Century. The calm of this memorial is striking.

It was a very moving experience but you MUST call the memorial's caretaker in advance. People go there to pray at the Jewish sage's grave.
