- HanniMexico City, Mexico1,247 contributionsNice, interesting and beautifulIt is one of the most significant buildings in the old town downtown Bratislava. It is Surrounded by three beaufil, yet very different plazas. The museum is nicely set and larger than it looks. You can climb de tower for a beautiful view of the old city and latter go tho the cold underground floor where Ice and prisioners were kept. We spend a few hours at this museum, and enjoied the visit.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 June 2024
- MKEL09284 contributionsGreat historical insight into Bratislava and the view from the tower was a great extra. On arrival is was great to be met by such friendly staff who gave me an overview of the museum before I set off. Lots of staff on hand for directions around the exhibits. Really interesting exhibits and the view from the tower was a great extra. Well worth the money and a great historical insight into Bratislava. The films used had English subtitles.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 22 June 2024
- BobN06Avondale, Pennsylvania721 contributionsGreat stop for history of BratislavaA very nice museum located in the town hall and a large number of the items were donated by local citizens. Can be a bit hard to find the entrance but well worth it as a piece of history as Bratislava was a major Roman site as well as the capital city of the Hungarian empire during the Ottoman occupation. One of Maria Theresa’s daughters lived here and it is close to Vienna so she visited often. You can also climb the city tower for nice views over the city. There are helpful guides throughout to point you in the right direction and guide you through the museum. A great stop if you are interested in a history of the city.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 July 2024
- NatMexico City, Mexico1,199 contributionsInteresting! We arrived at the city museum not really knowing what to expect; but we were greatly surprised. At the time of our visitor held multiple exhibitions —and all were equally interesting. Some of the temporary exhibits were about industrial design, fashion, architecture and heritage preservation: topics that we weren’t expecting to find but that are of great interest to us. The entrance includes the entrance to a tower that has an unbeatable view of the old town (historic center of Bratislava). The dungeons were my favorite part of the visit. They were very eerie but interesting. The museum shop has very cute and affordable souvenirs. All the staff is very welcoming and kind; and everyone speaks english and is happy to help. I recommend visiting this spot.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 September 2024
- ExpertReviewer99Leeds, United Kingdom1,755 contributionsImpressiveWe spent a good amount of time here. The ticket price included a lot! Definitely worth a visit if you are interested in history. Our ticket also involved going up the clock tower which served as an excellent viewpoint.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 September 2024

City museum is an obvious destination for those interested in history and the history of the city of Bratislava. The museum is huge (bigger than you might think) so take your time to walk around and explore everything. Nice view from the tower over the city (several directions) note that there are stairs and not accessible. Also, don't forget the dungeons at the bottom of the museum and the exhibition about Bratislava in modern times (entrance opposite the entrance to the city museum in the courtyard)

Students only costed €4 (adults €8). The exhibition was well organized to tell the story of Bratislava history part by part. The staff were amazingly helpful as they keep making sure we are on the right path (the museum layout could be confusing at times but there were no problems at all with these helpful staff) The tower is not very friendly for people with mobility problems, but I guess they could do nothing about it because of the way the towers were built many years ago. The view from the higher levels of the tower was phenomenal, I took many pictures. Some exhibitions were quite interactive. My favourite exhibition is a room where it tells the story of several Bratislava residents in different time, telling the history of Bratislava from a citizen’s perspective, and in different stages of its history. There are so much to see there and I think the admission ticket was a huge bargain, whether you are a student or not.

I really enjoyed this museum, especially the exhibits at the beginning of the tour. During your visit you are able to climb up the tower to a great lookout of the city. Towards the end the exhibits seemed less interesting and repetitive, but if they are not of interest to you, you are always free to walk past them. Appreciated that they had lockers so I could take a break from carrying my bag.

The museum was much longer than I expected. It has about 5 sections, one about historical outfits, one about the history of Bratislava, one about arts and crafts, and one about the tower construction.
The tower is not made for people with disabilities, it has narrow stairs. The view is great, it offers a great view of the square as well as a lot of other buildings. You get to walk around the whole thing.
There are free storage lockers in the entrance. Nice and helpful staff.

As the Castle was closed I went to the City Museum which is housed in the old town hall. It has a great tower to climb up and see across the rooftops. But it turned out the Museum was much more extensive than I had realised. So an hour did not do it justice. Great value at €5.

Nice museum to see and read about the city's history and view artifacts. Interesting exhibits. Climbing to the top of the tower is worth it, although be mindful of the twisting stone and wooden staircase, not for small kids or those with knee problems. Views are nice from the tower, and wasn't crowded at all.

Stunning historic building with artifacts dating back to the 3rd century. Really gives you an appreciation for the deep history of Bratislava. It also has a beautiful lookout over the old town. I’m honestly shocked that this isn’t on top of everyone’s list coming here.

The big museum of Bratislava is housed in the old town hall of the city. Mostly it covers local history and the development of the city of the city from I think medieval times to present with lots of exhibits and english descriptions. The museum has a pretty eclectic collection covering religion, Moravian lives, civic life, the library and archives of the city, Slovakian industry and there’s also a museum of torture. One of the best bits of the visit is the climb up the tower where you can get great views of the main square below and Bratislava Castle.
I thought the highlight of the museum was the beautiful courthouse and its Baroque decorated interiors.
Definitely worth a visit.

We recently visited Bratislava and were must impressed with our visit to the Bratislava City Museum (5 euro per adult) finding it a very pleasant place to visit and place we'd like to return to see again. The museum and the Old Town Hall tower are easily worth 2-3 hours of your time if you enjoy museum visits, history or tower views over old European cities.
The City Museum is well-designed and exhibition rooms are laid out chronologically well, offering you a nice walk through the history of Bratislava. There are probably 10+ rooms with many artefacts for you to see. Rooms towards the end of the museum, especially those which include 19th and 20th century artefacts, portraying what city life was like in Bratislava in the not too distant past were very good!
We also quite enjoyed the wall maps on the upper floors near the clock tower, as well as climbing up the tower and walking out to see the very nice views of the main square and the city of Bratislava. This was a highlight to the museum visit in addition to the nice exhibitions downstairs.
Overall, we found this to be a great museum for such a small city and will eagerly include a return visit if we find ourselves in Bratislava again. Based on our experience here, we find this an easy museum to recommend to anyone interested in learning a bit about the history of Bratislava and Slovakia.

We have about 2 hours free time after our 1 1/2 hour guided walking tour of the old town on a Saturday afternoon before we depart the city. I am thinking of spending that time in the City Museum or walking to the castle to visit the Museum of History there as well as the interior of the castle and the view. Should I even consider walking to the St. Elizabeth Blue Church?
Which would you choose if you have been to visit both? Thanks for a suggestion to spend my limited time in Bratislava.
