Gyor's claim to fame is the inventor of soda water lived in this town. This fountain was erected in his honor in the town area. Gyor is a quaint little town where we actually found some good buys!

Not working when we visited but if you see it walking around Gyor it is interesting. Right down the walking street from the Ferris Wheel.

I like the many statues, sculptures in the city. This one is a great example of how memory of an inventor can be kept for later generation without being dull, or simply adding a life-size sculpture, you will not remember later.

wonderful fountain that sat just outside our hotel. It was in the form of soda syphon. Did not fit in with the wine festival going on during our visit.

We wondered by this unusual fountain in the Old Town of Gyor and were curious about the story behind it. After some research we discovered that the inventor of the soda (or spritzer) bottle was a man named Anyos Jedlik, thus the Jedlik fountain. He was an inventor, engineer and physicist who became a Benedictine Priest and lived his last years in complete seclusion inthe Bendectine priory in Gyor. He lived from 1800-1895, wrote a number of scholarly books and is credited as the inventor of the Dynamo electric engine in addition to the commercially successful aerated soda bottle still used in the 21 St century.
