Located in Szechenyi Square in old town Gyor, the Column of St. Mary was built in 1686 by Bishop Kollonich of Gyor to celebrate the recapture of Buda from the Turks. The Virgin wears the crown of Hungary and holds the baby Jesus in her right arm and stands atop a tall column. At the four corners of the monument are statues of saints, St. Stephen, St. John the Baptist, St. Anthony of Padua and St. Leopoldo of Austria. The square is surrounded by beautiful buildings, restaurants with outdoor seating and colorful shops that make this a wonderful place to relax and experience the flavor of charming Gyor.

The seventeenth century monument commemorates the recapture of Hungary from the Turks. A statue of virgin Mary wearing the Hungarian crown and holding the infant Jesus in her arm stands on top of a high column. The column stands on a square base with statues of Saints at each corner. The base is decorated with floral designs and surrounded by a balustrade. The column stands in one of the main squares of the city surrounded by restaurants and historical buildings and is definitely worth a visit.
