Neighbourhood: District I / Buda
The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.

We went up on a Saturday which was a mistake as the church is closed for weddings...we saw at least 5 weddings in the time we were there. Also, part of the surrounding grounds were closed for the receptions of one or two of them. But what we saw of the church was spectacular. One of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. will have to go back one day to see inside.

We visited during our recent travels and booked the evening classical concert. The church is quite beautiful with their stained glass windows and alter. The music was heavenly. Highly recommend.

This is a must visit in Budapest. The church is as beautiful outside as it is inside. Two Kings were coronated here and 1 King and Queen are buried here. Buy your tickets online and go early to avoid that one tourist who takes 999 pictures of the same item and won’t get out of your pictures…. this is a popular place and it fills up quickly.

The whole Castle District is like walking into a Fairy tale, A popular church for locals (our friends got married and had christenings there). Significant in many ways for many reasons, another great photo-op here and in the square.

You’ll notice the colorful tiled roof as you wander the Castle grounds. Once inside, I was impressed by the warmth and coziness of this place of worship. Beautiful stained glass, impressive sepulcher, lovely arches, it all amounts to a worthwhile visit. Tickets are sold in the office across from the church.

This is an amazing church. The decor is stunning. The fact that it is part of the Fisherman's Bastion adds to the atmosphere here.

The location of this small church could not have been more central. But I was not impressed by this underwhelming church.

This was a very interesting church on the Buda side of the Danube. The porcelain tiles on the roof are enticing by themselves. Inside, the structure is heavily painted. (Read about Matthias, an important king for Hungary). The last emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire chose this church for his coronation. The area around the church is lovely and there is a great view of the Danube. This is close to the Palace area.
