The church is free and open to wander around in. While there don't miss the statue of the king outside, the crown he is wearing is the same one as still exists and is on display in parliament.

This church has been restored almost to its original design. Fabulous lead light windows. Take the walk up through the museum area.

Having visited hundreds of fabulous churches around the world, I was struck by how memorable Mathias' tile roof is. The setting is also spectacular, overlooking the Fisherman's Bastion looking down on the Danube river and across to Pest. We had a private guide explain the history and artwork inside the church, which was worthwhile, but a good guidebook would probably... More

I've been in countless churches all over Europe and this one still impressed me. It is quite gorgeous, worth the small entrance fee to go inside. We like that you are able to climb up to the various levels and look out into the church. Normally these are blocked off.

I visited this church with a local guide during a walking tour. I highly recommend a guided tour of this church. There is so much history gong back to the coronation of Franz Joseph and Princess Sissi, that a simple walk though without a guide would not be advisable. The walls and ceiling are covered with paintings... Most of which... More

The church itself is very impressive but one of the things that sets this church apart from many others is the unique roof that adds to the beauty.

Staying in District I / Buda

Neighbourhood Profile
District I / Buda
The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.
