Margitsziget is a lovely island that takes around 2 hours to walk from end to end. It's quite incredible to think it's literally an island in the middle of the Danube. It's got some lovely areas to walk around and a nice playground near the entrance to the island. There's also a small wildlife sanctuary. However the whole island is... More

Nice for having quiet walks, doing sports, spending time in the green. Accessible by walking from city center (not so far) or also by tram/bus.

Margaret Island is strategically located between Buda and Pest and it is accessible through Margaret Bridge, it is a lovely place to run or make any type of exercise. Amazing atmosphere and great view.

Named after the daughter of King Bela IV, St. Margaret, who lived in a Dominican convent at this site, this is a large park in the middle of the city. Margaret Island is the result of the fusion of three smaller islands during the process of regulating the flow of the Danube, in an attempt to control frequent flooding. Currently... More

There is construction going on, but it doesn't detract from the beauty of this island. The jogging path is a nice feature (not as hard on the knees). and I especially enjoyed watching the woodpeckers (green and great spotted). There is a small zoo with mostly ducks, but also other fowl and predators, along with nesting storks (in April). There... More

It is a nice and long walk, you have bike and running lines, big areas with grass, benchs along the way ...it is a perfect place to hide from the city noise.

We just wasted 2 hours of our precious time on this island because nobody told us it is a complete construction site at the moment (April 2017). There was absolutely nothing to do there. Everything was closed (except one small booth from where you could buy soft drinks), and everything was fenced off so you had to, at times, walk... More

Cycled through - fantastic to see a peacock with his feathers out. Lovely bird area, ruins, beautiful blossom trees. It could be wonderful. However, it was little more than a building site with construction lorries delivering materials, paths cordoned off. It was so noisy.

Margaret island, found in the middle of Budapest is a quiet sanctuary far away from the hectic bustle of the city, yet not too secluded to feel cut off. It is reachable on foot, by bike, car or bus. In summer it comes alive with tourists and Hungarians who go there for music festivals, family outings, water play, etc. There... More

When I bought the boat ticket (2500 Forints/9 Euros - valid for 48 hrs, unlimited trips), the staff there were promoting stopping at Margaret Island for a couple of hours before hopping back on to the boat for the rest of the trip on the Danube River. They however did not mention that the island was under major reconstruction. Anyway,... More

Staying in Margaret Island

Neighbourhood Profile
Margaret Island
For Budapest, this island between the banks of the Danube represents a green oasis, especially during summer when its emerald spaces are much enjoyed by both locals and tourists. The gardens here are very picturesque; the flowers in full bloom give the landscape a variety of hues; the fountains add an air of freshness, making walks peaceful, joyful and romantic. A leisurely stroll will uncover a variety of sites, even the ruins of a medieval Franciscan church and convent are still visible.
