About
Postojna Cave is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world's largest karst monuments. A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, the astonishing diversity of Karst features as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for such popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors. Visited both Postojna Cave and Skocjan Cave. So let's do a comparison
PC
- 2 km in by train, 1.5 km walk, 2 km out by train
- fully guided, 1.5 hour
- Disneyland-ish tour
- photography permitted
- see human fish (proteus anguinus) up close and personal
- more beautiful cave formation
- easier option for those with mobility issues
SC
- first part is fully guided (up to exit 1), second and third party is self guided (exit 2 or 3)
- more diversity. you will see silent cave, water murmuring cave, canyon, underground river in part 1 which is guided. then in part 2, you will be walking by a cliff surface, outdoors, and in part 3 you will enter another small cave system filled with natural daylight. I took 2h to walk 5.1 km and left via exit 3.
- no photography allowed
- lots of stairs, up and down. i would not recommend this for those looking to have an easy trek or with mobility issues

One of the more spectacular places we have visited. The cave is a total of more than 20 km long and 5.3 of them are open to tourists. You can buy tickets on line, but the price is the same as on site. Be there 15 min at least before the tours starts. You are assigned a specific time. The small electrical train takes you 3 km into the cave which takes about 15 min, then you walk with a guide for about 1 hour or another 1,5 km. The tour is offered in English, German, Slovenian and Italian or you can pay for an audio guide in another 15 or so languages. Fantastic limestone formations and interesting guiding. Very easy to walk on the concrete paths, well lit. Photographing is allowed but not with flash. Train back again so all in all about 90 min duration. There is a large parking at the foot of the hill which cost €5 when we parked. Thought that could have been included in the tour which was rather expensive. There are a couple of restaurants just outside the entrance to the cave, serving mostly burgers. Do not miss this if you are in the vicinity.

This cave was enormous! Bigger than any I've been to in the US. You ride a train to get to the bottom then walked through. Some of the rooms were huge and all were beautiful.

Postojna Cave was the highlight of our vacation in Slovenia and worth the high price.
The train ride was awesome and I felt like in a fairy tail movie.
The journey by foot on the cave was like a marathon, we move very quickly through it, but still admired and took pictures of this incredible cave.
If you buy tickets online go directly to the gate of the cave.

Of all the caves I visited this was the top experience. Worth every cent spent on it. Organization, and the whole visit was the best. The Postojna cave and Predjamski castle are must see.

Who hasn’t heard about the Postojna Caves? I got hooked by the magnificence of this natural spectacle, but what I remember most is a strange little animal with a completely white and soft body.

I had very high hopes for this but it was very disappointing. The train ride takes you in the middle of the caves. However, the train ride goes way too fast, so you can't look well.
Once you arrive in the middle you have to walk for at least 45 minutes. Although their website states that it is handicapped accessible I certainly do not recommend this. People who have difficulty walking or with disabilities will not be able to sustain this last part of the walk and someone for 45 minutes or pushing the hills is also much too heavy.
Once from the center, the 45 minute walk is practically the same all the time. I would say go to a "attraction" that is actually worth it

We toured this beautiful cave as part of a tour with Holland America. I give the cave a rating of 5+. However, our cave tour guide lowered my rating. He walked very fast, leaving most of our group behind and then we had to wait over half an hour at the gift shop before we were allowed to leave. Unacceptable!
Note: This was not the guide from HAL but one provided by the cave organization.
That said, the cave was stunning. The train ride in was efficient and comfortable. This tour was definitely worth taking.
People have frequented the cave as early as the 13th century, but it wasn’t until the 1800s that it became open to tourists. It was at that time that the train was put in. Note that after you get off the train, the tour begins with a fairly steep climb (the mountain). However, after that things level off and get much easier.

Willkommen!

Do we need to have the online ticket in March. How long does it take to typically complete the cave tour?

Hi, in March there is no problem to buy tickets on the spot, I just suggest to plan your arrival 20-30 minutes before the sheduled visit. If you buy tickets online is enough to show the confirmation on the phone. Welcome!

Hola! Gracias!!

No tendrás ningún problema.
