Our private guide explained the crane's history and use. Beautiful photo spot. You can see the wheels eight men walked to move the crane. No tour necessary as a plaque within the opening (free public access) gives some history and facts about the huge crane.

This is a beautiful crane and very big, and if you walk at the harbour it is interesting to look at but not more than that.

Nice crane in the harbor of Gdansk. If you want to make some nice pictures you need to go to the "island" on the other side of the river to see this crane in total.

The port crane was built in its present form in 1442-1444. The wooden construction contained a hoisting mechanism operated by humanmuscle-power. Several workers could lift goods weighing up to four tonnes

This medieval port crane is such a contrast to the modern cranes in the shipyards, but its purpose was the same - to lift and transfer cargo from ship to shore and vice versa. It's sturdily made of wood and is in good condition so...More

If there is one building that truly stands out as Gdansk it is the wooden crane. Well worth a visit and buy the ticket that also gives you access to the maritime and boat museums

I love the crane. We stayed in an Airbnb apartment with a view of the crane, and the waterfront. It's history is fascinating and you can look up from underneath and see the treadmills where men used to walk to work the mechanism.

Sorry if my answer comes too late. As a visitor to Gdansk I imagine you'll be staying in the old town. The crane is located next to one of the old city gates on the riverside so it's very easy to reach on foot. You may be... More
