Cool bar

We where here twice, and enjoyed it. The music is a good mix of genres, but never boring. The bar is dark and very metal in its decorations. Good prices. Somewhat accessible with tram or metro

Not a traditional rock bar.

So, I'm actually sat in the place at the time of writing.

First things to note : no WiFi that I can see, and it's set down a small alley which ends in a gate. You'll think you probably need to go through the gate to get to the entry but in fact there's a door on your right which let's you venture down the stairs to the bar.

Second: it's small. Like a reasonable sized European terrace size. This is not a place you can be anonymous in. There's no dance area like most rock places although there is a stage of sorts.. with two average sized tables on it. You can't prop up the bar here. You'll be in the way.

So, this is actually my second visit after one in the week with two old time rockers, one of whom djs in a well known Midlands rock bar and has done for a couple of decades. We left after one beer that time as none of us knew any of the music. However, that was early evening so I thought I'd wander through on a Friday night to see what it was like.

I've been here an hour now and not known a single song. Yes, the music is metal but it is niche metal, obscure bands who sort of sound OK but.. It's background music. It's not the focal of the place.

Let's put this into context. I've seen bands ranging from Devil Driver and Lamb of God to The Sisters of Mercy and Deep Purple to Iron Maiden. Metallica and Megadeth, Anthrax and Machine Head. I know my music. And I've not known one song.

However.. There's a buzz of an atmosphere here now. It's busy, with what seems to be LOTS of regulars. And.. Then there's the tourists like me. Sat alone looking properly disenchanted because.. they've not known a song yet (there's no jukebox.. the music is pumped from a pc behind the bar). We stand out, rather than blend in, like seagulls in an all puffin party. We came because we thought the menu was generic fish and were greeted with a selection of strange unintelligible menus in a language we just don't get.

As a bar for the groups of people who are used to it, it's pretty decent. I can tell this because I've run pubs and also spent years as a metal music fan..and the regs like it a lot.. but for a bar called Hells Bells the absence of anything remotely mainstream metal.. (nothing even close to Angus et al has played) it's pretty unforgivable. This is a site for recommendations for tourists and.. I can't do that here. We're not welcome and we don't fit in.

That last sentence to me, obliterates what my idea of a rock bar should be. Everyone should be welcome because they're bonded by the music. But, as I said earlier, the music isn't the focal point of here. It's a background that fits a 19-28 year old crowd who like the genre and want to socialise with each other. I'd've loved it if I was 19 and a local. But I'm not, and if you're reading this.. neither are you

Cool heavy metal bar.

The Smichov neighbourhood is a cool district of Prague that in my opinion is much more interesting than the more touristic districts of Prague such as Staroměstské Námestie or Mala Strana district, pubs, bars and restaurants are better and the price is superb and bars like Hells Bells sum up to me the attraction of this area.
A cellar pub, exposed brickwork, great wall art, a cool looking serving bar, big screen showcasing all types of music and nice decorative features abound throughout this bar, there's also plenty of seating options spread throughout this bar,it's just one cool bar.
We were here on a Sunday night, bar was busy with a great atmosphere, greeted warmly by a very pleasant member of staff who served us a beer each, we opted to have this bars own specially brewed beer called Hells Bells, these beers were served in excellent condition being iced cold and sparkling and as is the traditional in Prague with a big foamy head, we just chilled out and took in the great bar we were in.
My beer was exceptional, a light, hoppy, effervescent beer bursting with taste and very easy to drink indeed, a beer style I found very pleasant indeed.
We really enjoyed our beers in here and the great atmosphere so much so that we ended up staying for another beer each before we moved on and as on every other visit to here we had a great time.
Hells Bells is really easy to locate ,jump any of the numerous trams to stop Andél were you walk down a street called Na Bélidle were you will find this bar.
A wonderful bar, well worth checking out if your in the area.

Local hangout
Nov 2018
This place is a popular local hangout. We enjoyed the atmosphere and cheap beer. The music played while we were there was not really Heavy Metal, more like hair band rock. Great experience, though. Would definitely return for another visit.

Great bar!
Aug 2018 • Couples
Our first night in Prague we made this a priority. My husband and I are both into metal and so this place was perfect for us! Drinks are delicious and cheap; atmosphere is perfect for those into metal and rock. I read in some other reviews it was hard to find, but we didn’t really have any trouble finding it. It’s down an alleyway so just make sure to look down the alleys and not just straight ahead and you’ll babe no trouble finding it.

Great rock bar

Great decor, great tunes and great staff. A really good, down to earth metal and rock bar. We felt right at home. Really well priced as well. Definitely a place we'll come back to when we next visit Prague.

Bad menues
Aug 2018 • Couples
Non descriptive menues. Didnt say that it would be mustard or mayonese on the burger. The meat itselves was low quality, in general would not recommend. 1/10

Decent and Cheap

Me and my friend came here because we were looking for metal/alternative bars in Prague. It’s a bit of a trek away from the other bars in the city and you could very easily miss it but it’s pretty good if you’re looking for this kind of thing.
