The lookout tower was built for the General Land Centennial Exhibition in 1891 by the initiative of the founders of Czech Tourist Club: Dr. Vilem Kurz and architect Vratislav Pasovsky.

Having been inspired by the Paris lookout tower designed by engineer Eiffel, Petrin Hill which is 318 m high was chosen for the structure. The construction began on March 16, 1891, according to the initial design of architect Vratislav Pasovsky further elaborated by engineers Frantisek Prasil and Julius Soucek from Czech and Moravia Machine Works (Ceskomoravska strojirna).

The opening ceremony took place on August 20 of the same year. The foundations were laid 11 meters underground to hold the 63.5-metre tall steel construction that weighed 175 tons. An octagonal tube is the core of the structure with the lift surrounded by two spiral staircases with 299 stairs - one for each direction. The entire structure includes bracing elements in the shape of Saint Andrew's crosses. The tower has two lookout landings; the upper one is 55 metres high. The ground floor and basement are situated in a neo-Renaissance building.

At the beginning of July 1938, the top of the tower was damaged by fire, probably caused by a short circuit in the lift cage. The observation tower was a TV transmission tower between 1953 and 1992. Today, it is only used as a lookout tower.

We have been to Petrin Tower twice. We walked up the hill the first time as the funicular tram was out of action but that was not for the unfit. However our second trip was by the funicular tram and it took four minutes to reach the top then a gently stroll to the tower through the gardens. I know... More

This tower is modeled after the iconic French Landmark but is smaller. To reach the viewing platform, there is a 299 0r s0 step climb. Not for the unfit,

The girl in the ticket office looked at me and assumed (correctly) that I would want the lift to the top. It's a tight squeeze for 4 passengers and an operative. But it gets you there. Glad we hadn't walked up - it was wet and windy outside, but as the rain cleared there were fantastic views over Prague. Down... More

We managed to beat the crowds on our visit after walking up from our hotel near the castle. There was no queue and our climb to the top wasn't too painful - we opted to take the stairs. We had plenty of time and space at the beginning to enjoy the stunning views. Perhaps a storyboard at the top pointing... More

It took us awhile to hike up Petrin hill to get to the tower. After taking a different way down we realized you can get there a bit easier from the castle district. We thought the views from the lower deck were better as you were not as high up, but both were great.

I love a great view point and I enjoy a walking challenge. Getting up the tower was good workout and a simple challenge( lift access pay extra). If you stop at the halfway point you can invest in a Petrin Tower coin and a lovely gentleman shows you how to make your own. Once at the top however there are... More

They need to do a bit of crowd management. At some point there is no place to move around. Otherwise, it is a nice place.

It's quite around 15 min. walk up the hill if you're traveling from Prague castle. There is an option to take a tram up to the hill but I'd suggest to do it by foot as the view from above while heavily-breathing will be much appreciated :) We chose also to go up by the steps, it got very cold... We (my sister and I) are big fans of a viewpoint, however this one was terrifying to the point that the view was not enjoyable for us. The tower was swaying, even though it wasn't a particularly windy day. It made us both feel quite uneasy, ill even. The view of Prague was good but we couldn't enjoy it. The... More

On the top of this hill there is a watch tower. Petřín tower is a very small copy of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The tower is made from steel. You can go inside the tower and walk up to the top. From this tower you can see beautiful views of Prague. March and October: every day 10.00 - 20.00
