About
The Church of St Nicholas in Lesser Town in Prague, the most famous Baroque church in Prague, stands along with the former Jesuit college in the centre of the Lesser Town Square. It represents a magnificent example of the "Prague Baroque" period of the 18th century. W.A. Mozart himself played the organ in this church!

Neighbourhood: Malá Strana (Little Quarter)
Malá Strana is one of the oldest and the most beautiful neighbourhoods in the city. Nestled underneath Prague Castle it was once a part of the Kings route taken by future kings on their way to coronation - originating in the Old Town, crossing Charles Bridge and leading to Saint Vitus Cathedral. Cobblestone streets are lined with picturesque medieval houses, remarkable palaces, churches, kitsch shops and restaurants. Do not hesitate to turn a corner into any narrow street. You will suddenly find yourself in a calm and charming neighbourhood full of hidden gardens, parks with peacocks, fruit trees and ponds. As the neighbourhood is a home to Czech Parliament and many ministries, you can also run into well-dressed officials. If you are thirsty or hungry, it is the right place to be. Restaurants offer delicious traditional food and of course, the best Czech beers.

One of the most beautiful churches in Prague, in my opinion. On the outside, it is not really exceptional, this is also due to the positioning, surrounded at a short distance from other buildings, in such a way that you cannot have an overview of it. But the interior is wonderful, richly decorated, full of statues, icons and wonderful paintings.
Attention, strange or not, there is another church with the same name in Staromestske namesti, the main square in the old town.

Beautiful baroque church, located on Malostranske namesti.
There are two St. Nicholas churches in Prague. The picture featured above is the St. Nicholas Baroque church located in Mala Strana. It is one of the most beautiful churches in Prague, perhaps the most ornate.

Mozart played the organ here, but then again, Mozart played in quite a few places in Prague.

The church belfry, can be accessed and is open to the public.
It is an ambitious climb, the only way to get to the top, since there is no elevator.

Just another tower to climb, but with an interesting twist. During the communist era, there was a small observation "office" at the very top, overlooking and observing the American Embassy nearby. I lived in Prague those days and we had no clue it existed.

How ironic - the communists spying from the church tower ...
I felt sorry for the guy whose job it was. He had to climb the stairs to his office every day.

If you like to get a close up view of the church green cupola, stop for a drink on the terrace of the Coda restaurant located in the hotel Aria nearby.

One of the two Late Gothic and Baroque St. Nicolas Churches in Prague built by architect Dientzenhofer. This one is in one corner of the Old Town Square. Services and concerts are held there regularly and the acoustics make hearing the church organ a delight. Interesting trivia: the church was used by the Czech partisan during the 1945 uprising to hide broadcasts of Radio Prague, when the main radio building was under attack by the Waffen-SS.

Thanks for your comprehensive information, Lucinda T, but your it applies to the St. Nicolas Church in the Old Town Square, but this one is in the Lesser Town Square. Hope we will fight this confusion one day :)

St. Nicholas Church is one of the most visited churches in Prague. Located in the Malá Strana district, the church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra. The 75 meter high dome makes the church one of the most striking buildings in the district.
The church is considered one of the most interesting Baroque monuments in Europe. The interior has statues and decorations in marble and gold and frescoes. On the ceiling of the ship, Jan Lukáš Kracker painted a fresco about the life of Saint Nicholas with an area of 1500 m². Franz Palko painted the Celebration of the Holy Trinity on the ceiling of the dome.
Very verfy very beautiful church, a wonder of Baroque, we loved it! A must see!!
