The Cimrman Theater celebrates its 50th season in 2016. Now you have the unique opportunity to experience his work in English. Many Czechs consider his plays untranslatable but our productions prove all the nay sayers wrong. Despite the fact that Jára Cimrman is a fictitious character, in 2005 a majority of Czechs named him the Greatest Czech in a nation-wide poll. Our performances take place in the Cimrman Theater with the original set and costumes. The cast is composed exclusively of professional, native-English speaking actors. Like Monty Python is for English-speakers, any Czech can quote Jára Cirman, so learn some of his catch phrases too!

My family and I got so lucky today. We saw the play The Stand-In (Zaskok) in Baltimore on Cimrman English Theatre's American tour. It was just wonderful. What a talented ensemble this is! I grew up with the plays in Czech, but the English version was just as fantastic. The jokes translated really well and actors were having a great... More

My friends and I enjoyed it immensely. We saw 'Zaskok' 'The Stand-in' a while back and also loved it, so we were expecting quite a bit here. It didn't disappoint. There was a lot of wit and humour; a bit less action that 'Stand-in' I think and if you don't follow everything you might miss a series of jokes. With... More

Foreigners should be aware of one thing. By seeing a show by Cimrman English Theatre they take the exam from being Czech, and by enjoying it they become Czech. Or, at least, as Czech as possible. Specific Cimrman humour is very simple, bitter-sweet, touching, childish yet clever. Phrases from Cimrman plays go with many of us - Czechs - for... More

It's truly remarkable what these guys are doing. Cimrman is the quintessential Czech comedy, a really interesting phenomenon. And it has long been considered "untranslatable", due to how intrinsically Czech it is. "It would make no sense in English!", my Czech friends would say! "How would you translate the puns?" Well, they are translating it, and it works! Ive seen... More

I was really surprised, wonderful performance with charismatic actors. I am not so strong in english so e.g. part with Hamlet was hard nut for me, but even so I enjoyed it very much and I must recommend the play. Go for it !

If you don't know about Jara Cimrman then you don't know Czech culture. Since I know the Czech versions by heart I am always looking forward to hear how the English translation cope with certain jokes. Have to say I am crying as I did during the originals.

One would think that translating typical Czech comedy into English would not work, as a lot of the jokes are quite contextual and based on Czech language, but it totally does work! Lot of fun and cool way to soak in a bit of Czech culture from early 20. century.

As ex-pats living in Prague, we are keen to try authentic, non-touristy Czech experiences. I had come across the legendary Jara Cimrman stories, but, until now, had thought I would really only understand this classic Czech humor when my Czech language skills had much improved. What fun to find such a witty translation of The Stand-In, performed by great actors... More
