Neighbourhood: Malá Strana (Little Quarter)
Malá Strana is one of the oldest and the most beautiful neighbourhoods in the city. Nestled underneath Prague Castle it was once a part of the Kings route taken by future kings on their way to coronation - originating in the Old Town, crossing Charles Bridge and leading to Saint Vitus Cathedral. Cobblestone streets are lined with picturesque medieval houses, remarkable palaces, churches, kitsch shops and restaurants. Do not hesitate to turn a corner into any narrow street. You will suddenly find yourself in a calm and charming neighbourhood full of hidden gardens, parks with peacocks, fruit trees and ponds. As the neighbourhood is a home to Czech Parliament and many ministries, you can also run into well-dressed officials. If you are thirsty or hungry, it is the right place to be. Restaurants offer delicious traditional food and of course, the best Czech beers.

Statues of Ujezd
Dec 2019
This is a very poignant memorial to the peoples who suffered hunger during the communist regime. Very easy to find, just walk over the bridge before the Charles bridge that links from Bethlehem Square. Its also not far from here to the Lennon Wall and the Franz Kafka museum.

Disturbing yet beautiful

This is the Monument to the Victims of Communism, not the Hunger Wall.
It's disturbing and beautiful at the same time.

The Hunger Wall is NOT the statues at Ujezd
Nov 2019
Many of the images here on Tripadvisor show the Memorial to the Victims of Communism on the Hunger Wall page. This is not the case - the Hunger Wall is a defensive wall built centuries ago in response to a famine (hence the Hunger Wall name). The king wanted a defensive wall built, and the people needed feeding. The king asked the people to build the wall, and in returen they were paid in kind with food. The wall itself - or the part that remains, is on the hill at Petrin. Take the funicular up the hill (or walk) and the wall is to the south of the station at the top, throught the rose gardens. Not a massively interesting attraction - it is just a wall. But take the time to learn about its history, and its worth visiting to see where and understand why - and why the statuers are NOT part of it!

Very moving. Very different. Quite harrowing too. Makes you think. Highly unusual, beautifully sculpted piece.

Make sure you find the right section!

My sisters and I trekked through the park to find the hunger wall. It so happened that we came upon the battlement area; it was still a great sight but wasn’t the part we were looking for. After re reading reviews. It seems that the statues are near the bottom of the wall, not the top! Although it is a good walk if you have step goals!

This is a lovely thing to visit as a reminder of how cruel people can be. A memorial to those lost. Near the train to the petrin.

Wasted so much time

I’m putting this on google and TripAdvisor—google mismarked the location, and TripAdvisor doesn’t bother to provide a geotag link. We walked 3 miles on various paths. The only ones we did not go or at the very very top. Only after coming back down did we realize that that must be where the sculptures are because that’s the only part of that entire hill that we did not cover. Had any of the directions said so or had there been a proper geo-tag we would’ve walked straight to the top and been done with it. Very disappointing.

Understated - seriously makes you think....

This display of life under communist control is really understated and so well constructed - thought provoking is a really good phrase to describe.
When you walk away from the display, you will find yourself thinking about what life was like and the inspiration behind the display.
Remember, communist control only ended in 1989 - only 30 years ago!
