This is a fantastic place in the village of Shannon. The hosts that own and run Owlcatraz have done an outstanding job restoring the native vegetation and ecosystems and creating a haven for the native birdlife. Considering this is a small family run place, the cost of the entry fee is very minimal given that it includes guided tours of... More

Paid $60.00 for 2 adults and 2 preschoolers. Did the farm walk and saw 1 kunekune pig, few chooks, 1 deer, 1 goat, 3 alpaca, few eels, and lots of ducks and that is all the farm walk.. then they showed the owls that cannot even hardly see because too dark and that is all what we paid for. They... More

We were travelling though, cool little spot for a look at some pretty amazing birds. We only did the owl house, however this was very interesting. Very beautiful place to visit.

Firstly parking was not a problem and the staff were friendly and helpful, but that's where the plus points ended. You are not allowed to wander around at your own pace, as you are accompanied by staff on a guided tour. There is a building that houses a number of owls and outside there are a few native birds and... More

We paid $25 each for a 40min loop of 10 birds. 5 weka and 5 owls. Was told this included a farm walk but we were told to head back after viewing the owls. Very disappointing and overall daylight robbery. Was not impressed.

We arrived late in the day as they were about to shut but because we had German tourists with us, the owner gave us a personalised tour of the jail and the owls. Very pretty environment and very informative from a super friendly host. Definitely recommend it. Love the animal names and complementary tea and coffee.

We decided to visit owlcatraz as we did when I was younger and it was great. This time not so much ! The staff were all very lovely but the whole experience dragged on for a lot longer than we feel it needed to . We had my grandparents with us who aren't too great on their feet and the... More

The Owlcatraz farm is full of different animals, who are very friendly. I think that is good for kids, but even myself had a really nice time patting the donkeys and lamas. The owls usually sleep during the day, so you can see them just sitting around and not moving. Almost like these dead bird models in museums. The best... More
