Two hours wellspent on a lovely day
Dec 2019
We did this on the morning of our free day in Roses. It was two hours very well spent and gave us an appetite for lunch. You cannot physically miss the citadel as its has an almost complete surrounding wall and is on the main road into the modern town. Entrance is a very reasonable 4 Euros with reduction for seniors. First you get a small well set out museum detailing the various phases of occupation and then you go out into the old settlement. The laminated guide sheet, which is available in several languages, is clear and informative and you can easily self guide to get insights into how the first town developed. Interesting and instructive.

Ancient City

I did not realise the Citadel was so close to the town centre but its right there across the road from the promenade on Pl. de les Boxtes (in front of the Tourist Office).

We followed the footsteps of the two bronze Spanish Conquistador statues on the promenade across to the Citadel.

We received a warm welcome from the English-speaking staff and were given Seniors discounted tickets of 2 Euros 50, normal price 4 Euros.

It took us a good three hours to take in all the interesting items in the museum, foundations of the monastery, cathedral, medieval settlement, Roman remains, and generally walking around the site.

There are seats here and there to rest on your tour and if you’re feeling energetic you can walk the walls - I believe the views are fantastic from up there.

I would not recommend a visit on a wet or really hot day as you are very much in the open air and exposed to the elements. I also suggest taking a bottle of water, hat, sunscreen, and sensible footwear as it’s a bit rough in places.

It is definitely worth the few Euros for the visit to learn about the history of the lovely town of Roses.

A walk through a couple millenia
Sep 2019
From the original Greek settlement and the commerce with the local Iberian people, through the middle ages village and wall, including a still standing church and monastery, till the outer defensive walls built up by Emperor Charles V in the XVI century. Through a 1h pleasant walk around you can have a look at the history of Roses since its foundation. A must see in town.

If you come to Roses this is a MUST to visit. Total cost 4 euros (2.50 euros for pensioners with proof, so bring some ID). They suggested at the desk that a total visit is about 1 and a half hours, in that time I barely scratched the surface, I will come back when I have more time and spend an afternoon here. The small museum ( with recovered items ) starts back in the Stone Age with flint tools and covers bronze/Greek/ Roman/French as well as Spanish history. The complete site within the current walls cover a lot of foundations/buildings from this period, mostly ruins, right up to today. Some areas require good footwear. Helpful staff that speak very good English. Toilets on site but I did not find a cafe. Overall excellent

Really cool visit. When you entry you have a small museum with some tools from antic Greec and Roman civilization.
Then you access to the Citadele and you can enjoy the antique city and all the olive trees and wonderful views.

Interesting for all ages

A really interesting place to visit, with a pleasant setting of the castle remains, complemented with tree shaded benches where you can enjoy a picnic. The exhibitions are well presented and they have information leaflets in English which helps bring the place to life. There are also a couple of videos which show the archeology being undertaken around the area. A good place to visit for all ages. Excellent value for money for a few hour appreciation into the local history. I recommend it.

Must See In Roses
Sep 2018 • Family
This was my first time seeing such extensive history in one place and it's still one of my favorite places to visit. This is a true must-see when you're in Roses. The history of the city is fascinating and you have a great, open area to walk around and view substantial proof of that history. The ruins of the cathedral are my favorite. You can also walk along the wall, which gives you a view of the beach and the surrounding streets. Really great place to go!

Interesting place to visit
May 2019 • Couples
This huge open area near the centre of Roses offers something a little different from other seaside holiday things to do. The small museum covers the history of Roses from its Greek origins through to the last century, there’s a well-displayed range of archaeological artefacts and the site itself has a well-explained range of historical ruins. There’s translations into English of the museum display captions. We spent a good couple of hours there.
