We came across this statue by accident, as it is close to the port and in front of the tourist office. The tourist office sells a book about Bamse, titled "Sea Dog Bamse: World War II Canine Hero" by Andrew Orr. A similar statue is in Montrose Harbor, Scotland where Bamse is buried. Interesting history.

During our visit on sky princess in June after our am tour we went back into town.
The story of this canine hero is lovely. I adore dogs, so lovely to stop by and read. Very close to cruise ship berth

If happen to visit Honningsvag en route to Nordkapp, go for a wander in the town - if you're on a Hurtigruten cruise the ship docks practically on the main street. There's a lovely museum - the Nordkapp museum -with a statue of the dog Bamse outside.

Now if, after getting your mind blown away by the spectacular Nordkapp, and filling your mind with all that's in the museum, and you fancy a spot of shopping, down by the quay there's a very good gift shop - it's on the left coming inland from the quay.

Even more special, if you go just a few yards further and turn left, on the far right-hand corner you will find a little shop almost hidden away. It's run by a lovely Sami lady called Berit and is full of lovely Sami-made reindeer hats, bags, and purses, and all sorts of things made from reindeer antler and bone. My friend and I acquired quite a lot here including a fabulous bone needle case. The shop takes cash only, but there is an ATM machine on the main street.

Honningsvag is lovely little town and it's well worth taking some time to wander around.

A very interesting statue in front of the information centre. The story of Bamse is very interesting and includes the information on a sign close by.

Of course any dog statue will get rave reviews from visiting Brits - but this one has a great war record too - already detailed by previous admiring reviewers and worth looking up. And, another plus point - he was said to like his pint too - he not only got bought pints every night at the local pub by grateful shipmates, but after he had seen any drunken sailors home, he was known to go back to the pub (using his free bus pass) to cadge another free pint from the publican. No doubt this shaggy dog story has become enhanced with every telling - but why not - nice tale from hard times.

The statue of Bamse is a copy of the one in Montrose Scotland and is in honour of the dog who was brought as a puppy to Honningsvag, served with his master on board a Norwegian Navy minesweeper during WW11 and ended his life in Montrose, Scotland, where the ship was based, a truly great companion to all his shipmates in difficult times.

This statue is right outside the tourist center and museum and commemorates the life of a heroic dog that served with Norwegian forces during WWII. He is credited with saving the lives of several sailors and was granted his own bus pass so he could get around town unassisted.

Bamse statue is right dab in the middle of Honningsvag and you can't help but stumble on it. We were there on a rainy and windy day but still had to get our token photos. It isn't something that you would go out of your way to see, but if you are in this very small town, you might as well check out Bamse.

Had read reviews here before going here. One of the local people filled us in on more of the dogs history/details. Nice for Photo Ops.... There is a troll nearby too. Didn't get the story on the troll though.

If you walk along a to the wharf/dock area you can witness a series of special statues spread out as you walk along and unique Art designed from Footwear. It's, only a 20 minutes stroll round trip. The statues I believe represent Ice, Ocean, Wind, and (?) sorry forgot. This was a fun side trip if you have the time

You may not believe when you see it, but this is a life-sized statue of Bamse, a WW2 canine hero from Honningsvag. There is a display case nearby telling more of his exploits. Bamse was the family dog of the harbour master who commanded a Norwegian minesweeper that escaped at the beginning of WW2. Most of Honningsvag (except the church) was destroyed at the end of the war. Let's remember all the heroes of the war - military, civilian, and canine. The statue sits near the tourist office by the dock for the big cruise ships.
