Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The church is a stalwart, surviving WW2 and hosting those who resurrected the town. See the black and white photos in the lobby. It is shyly located at the top of the Main Street and to the left. Check the opening times. Typically white exterior belies the vibrant reds and greens within. A traditional, Norwegian model fishing boat is suspended from the ceiling. Pulpit. Candles. A floral arch from a recent wedding. Charming. Stunning harbour views opposite.

Honningsvåg is a good starting point to get to know people and nature on the island of Mageroe. We had booked an island tour by bus. Far from mass tourism to small fishing villages. Here it is not hectic and noisy, the discovery of slowness. There's time to walk here. In summer in sunshine in sheltered areas you can watch the king crabs with a bit of luck. My Recommendation: In midsummer with infinite sunshine.

This church that was built in the late 1800's overlooks the town and harbour below. Like so many Nordic Churches it is simplistically built both inside and out. The facility served the fishermen and their families for a few centuries and is still active today. Donations are accepted and needed I truly believe.

Our ship docked in the center of this small town and an information center was at the port. You could get bus information to North Cape (for both private tour buses and city buses) at the information center and you could buy tickets there too. Some good maps were available for purchase, but the best free map was posted on the front wall of the souvenir shop next to the information center. We took a picture of it and hiked up to the path pictured on the map. The day was cold and rainy (it appears this is their weather 75% of the time), so we didn't go to North Cape, but most people did. The hiking path went up to a small cemetery and small monument overlooking the town, then past a small hut and continued up and over the crest of the hill. There was an option to veer left and hike up the higher hill to overlook the port at a higher point. Since the wind was kicking up, we turned around at the first crest on the path and walked back around town.
The town had a church, a couple hiking paths, an ice bar, and was the gateway to North Cape (nordkapp). Since we didn't go to North Cape, we made a point of snapping a picture of it from the ship as we sailed past it on our way out of Honningsvag. It was still fogged in, but it broke just long enough to let us take a picture of the large flat top with the fog hovering above it (although the observation building and the monument were not able to be seen from the ship due to the rain). On a clear day, the view would have been exceptional both from land and from the ship.
A final note--we were there on June 21st, the summer solstice/longest day of the year. Because of this, the sun didn't set for several days while we were in the Arctic Circle. Even when we returned south of the circle, the sun would set around midnight, but we had daylight all night after the sun set. The sun was below the horizon, but the light was still strong until the sun rose again.
I am glad we went, but the weather was a big factor in not being able to make the most of it.

Honningsvag is a very small town so the walk to the church is just a short walk up the hill. It was closed when I was there but I think is open during the summer months. WWII memorial just outside the front of the church. Most reviews here have already mentioned it's survival.

This 300+ year old church has a great history. During WW II, the German army burned down the entire town so that the allies would not be able to inhabit the location. Many of the soldiers were German Lutherans and did not feel right burning the church, so they spared it. It is located on the highest point of the town with a great view of the area. The church was open and we were even able to climb the bell tower. When you visit, note the heaters along the floor for the congregation. It gets very cold in the winter.

Definately worth a visit during your trip to Honningsvag, don't forget to leave a donation on your way out. The church is funded by the locals and is the only building not to be destroyed by the bombing during the second world war.

This beautiful white wooden church was the only building left standing as the occupying forces retreated out of Norway in WW2. It became home to the local men who managed to return. It was their dormitory, laundry and bakery yet today you’d never know. It is a tranquil place to sit and just take a moment. Look for the boat that points to the altar ( almost every Norwegian Church has one).
The church is an easy walk from the cruise pier.

I think this is the Honningsvag Church which is the parish church of the Nordkapp Municipality in Finnmark County and it is a survivor. It is the only building that was left standing after the occupying German forces in the last months of WW II forced an evacuation on the local population so they could destroy all the buildings in a process of razing everything to the ground across northern Norway to deny the approaching Soviet armies any food or shelter. It is not clear why the church was left but it was used by those who returned as the only shelter till the town was rebuilt.
The church is charming and still in use and the door is open. There is no charge but they suggest a donation to the organ replacement fund.

The only building left standing after the German retreat in WW2. Visit if for no other reason than that. Beautiful but plain. Enter in peace and leave uplifted.
