Old prison with authentic wall writings
Aug 2019
The Prison is authentic and exciting place to visit. This is a museum, but it has been an old prison and there is many things left there and that makes it really authentic.
It almost seems like the prisoners and the stuff just left. Offices and prison cells have been left intact.
There is also clothing and other things to see in the museum. In a guided tour you here exciting stories about the prison history and stories about the prisoners.

Very authentic prison museum
Aug 2019
This museum introduces the history of correctional treatment in Finland and the prison life in the past.

The museum is located in the former premises of the provincial prison next to the Häme Castle.

When it was built in 1871, it was the first prison in Finland with cells. The prison was used until 1993.

The place is in its original condition. The past lives on in the writings on the walls, the items, and the lived-in cells.

Great place, largest prison museum in Europe
Aug 2018
The old country prison is well worth of visiting. It’s not experience like Alcaraz, but it’s intereating and you can see prison’s life in Finland in the old days and about 20 years ago, when it closed. Downside is, that prison museum is open only in summertime (may-august)

Old prison turned into the museum. You walk inside and you feel like you are in the movie. An exhibition with a lot of interesting information.

Great excursion to prison life

Old prison converted to museum (and not so long time ago) tells its story both by the building itself and by the detailed and well-explained exhibitions set in the cells.

Fascinating and authentic prison finally open
Jun 2017 • Family
The museum was closed for a long time and now that is was finally re-opened, we ventured a visit with 3 kids (11, 5 and 3). The museum was very interesting for us all: the kids loved exploring the building itself (including the basement and the inmates' sauna) and seeing how the prisoners lived and spent their days. There are a couple of units that have been kept as they were in the 1990s when the last prisoners inhabited them, and the rest of the exhibition concentrates very hands-on to correctional services in general and how the prisoners' everyday life looked like. The exhibition is somewhat small so the visit won't take a whole day.

The museum is run by the local Lions Club's volunteers, and the staff was very helpful and friendly. The pricing is also reasonable and you get a discount if you visit the Häme Castle as well.

Worth a visit to experience the authentic prison atmosphere.

Authentic prison experience, exhibitions incomplete as of Summer 2017
Jun 2017 • Family
Have been waiting to visit for a while now as the museum has been closed due to renovations. Apparently the renovations were due to a burst water pipe and flooding on lower floors. A lot of the exhibition items have been taken off site, and were not in the museum as of June 2017. There is still plenty of authentic items to make a visit wortwhile, but something to be aware of.

The highlight of the visit is the building itself. The prison building was built in the 1870s. The building has been kept the same since the prison was closed in the early 1990s.

An interesting feature is the sauna for the inmates in the basement. A couple of cells have been kept in their 1990s state and the you can still read the inmates' writings on the walls in the basement cells (think toilet writings).

I feel that the museum is nowhere near its full potential, partly due to the missing exhibition items. This may be resolved soon, but the staff had zero information about this. I would nonetheless recommend a visit if just for the building and atmosphere itself! And it works with smaller kids too, nothing overly graphic.

Interesting museum
Jun 2017 • Couples
Interesting and authentic museum but quite small though. You would learn various sides of the life inside a prison. It takes about 30-60 minutes to stroll around the place and read most of the information boards. You could spend more time too if you are interested to learn in detail.
