Worth doing if beach is open
Jan 2021 • Family
Worth a visit if in the area, but don’t waste time walking from the 12 Apostles visitor centre, if you’ve got a car, drive to the Gibson steps car park. We made the mistake of walking from the visitor centre as we didn’t realise there was any other way to access. The walk took about an hour return, plus time spent on the beach.

Great beach and views.

The steps offer a different view of the apostles from the beach.
The steps are well worth the effort and I highly recommend going.

Excellent Vista

The view along the coast is spectacular, as are all the viewing sites along this remarkable coastline. Disappointing that the steps are closed off but when you observe the significant fissure in the cliff face at the base of the steps its obvious why its closed. Suspect that the steps will need to be moved. However, the region is a dream without all the buses. !!!

Steps closed!
Sep 2020 • Family
Unfortunately the stairs down to the beach from the cliffs were closed, but it was still delightful to look over the ocean to the sound of the baaing sheep across the road rather than to the sound of tourist buses and helicopters. Yay for local tourism in the age of covid! Get out into our country if you can. There’s never been a better time.

Gog and Magog
Jul 2020
I have a secret to confess... after the amount of walking I had done on this road trip... part of me was relieved it was closed. We headed there with the intention of walking down to the beach... I was assured it was a great access point for the beach.

At the lookout you can get some great photos, and then you start the descent... but you are blocked a little way down because it's closed. There has been subsidence on the cliff...so for safety reasons they have closed it.

It's still worth stopping to have a look... but for the moment they are feeling sorry for people like me and they have closed it. :D

Closed in June 2020

We visited on 23 June 2020 and found the stairs closed for safety work. You can’t get a good view of Og and Magog from the carpal, but you can from the Twelve Apostles lookouts just down the road (which have now reopened).

Not one of the “big ticket” attractions
Mar 2020
Worth a visit, but the steps down to the beach are closed. Nice views, nice beach, but no better than some of the lesser known beaches, and much less dramatic than the Arch, or the Grotto, or the Apostles.

If you are short on time, miss this one out - although 10 minutes is all it takes to tick it off the list.

Poor relation in the neighbourhood
Mar 2020
Judged alongside the other nearby attractions (12 Apostles & Loch Ard Gorge), Gibsons Steps adds little to this part of the Great Ocean Road trip. To be fair, we were unable to take in the whole experience because there was a safety gate preventing going down the steps to the beach, but I doubt we would have bothered in any event.

Worth a stop of the car to stretch the legs and take a photo at the viewing platform, but then time to move on.

Incredible Scenic Views, definitely one of the worthwhile stops on the great ocean road trip, it's something that has to be experienced.
