Came across this castle by accident. There is a viewpoint of it when driving out of Cresslough and then you follow narrow roads up to it. A small castle which is free to visit and makes for an interesting stop.

It was a brilliantly sunny morning so on impetus we decided to make a detour on our drive home from Dunfanaghy. Doe Castle is quite a distance down perilously narrow roads off the main route to Letterkenny and barely worth the effort. I think we might have felt very differently if our visit had been in the season and we had been able to avail ourselves of a guided tour and get a coffee, but in October we had the place to ourselves. The setting is very attractive but the castle is small and can be explored in 20 minutes at most. There are some informative notices with details of the history. Local opinion is that the best way to see the castle is at a distance from the scenic viewpoint just past the Lackagh Bridge on the road to Downings. Out of season, certainly, I would be inclined to agree.

Great castel to have a wander around. Good car parking. It will not take long but a good stop to stretch your legs

The word Doe means “Territory” We thought that was interesting since we use the term John Doe or Jane Doe when someone cannot be identified. Neither here or there really. Doe Castle was wide open for us to walk around and we were the only people on site until we went back to parking lot. It’s nice to be able to walk around freely. The keep was not open but we still really enjoyed the experience and the setting is beautiful. Signs on hand really helped give a great sense of how things were and progressed for the castle.

We visited on an extremely rainy day so we weren’t able to explore outdoors as much as we wanted but we enjoyed the informative tour with our enthusiastic tour guide. The stairs within the castle structure are steep and narrow. The tour was only about 30 minutes so a perfect length for children.
