About
Battery Hill, overlooking the township of Tennant Creek is named after the original ten-head stamp battery. The 1930’s site echoes the soul and spirit of the miners. Underground Gold Mine tours are conducted regularly. Take self guided walks and meander past the historic machinery. Pay a small fee and enjoy Freedom, Fortitude and Flies; the social history museum and Minerals Museum with its superlative McLaughlin Collection. You will be surprised, they are worth every cent.

If you have never been in a tunnel before and like reliving the 'good old days', this is for you.

A third of the mine's workforce were forced Aboroginal works but you won't see that mentioned anywhere. Also expect a good deal of sexism. I am attaching a photo of some of the merchandise on offer, it is only the half of it.

We did this tour mainly because we had a couple of hours to spare in Tennant Creek. And I didn’t have any high expectations but I was totally surprised.

The tour is very safe, logically set out, and you leave understanding a lot about the mining and the people of this area.

Hats off to David the tour guide. Loved his enthusiasm. By the way he fossicks for gold on his time off, so he’s right into it.

The whole facility at battery Hill is worth a visit, if nothing else but for the memorabilia and museum. They also have a very good gift shop.

A great information centre. We went here right away when we arrived in Tennant Creek and were provided very informative information with maps to go along with it for what to do in the area. There are a couple of museums here as well as a old mine tour which you can visit for a fee. You can see some old machinery on the outside also.

Brian was our tour guide and his knowledge, mining experience and skill to include people on the tour was commendable. We were very impressed with what the team created to allow visitors to immerse them selves in the history and life of the mine worker. Well done. Note to visitors: book a tour, it is worth it as you will miss too much on a self guided tour.

Don't miss this Information and Museum centre, it is a gem!

Really friendly staff (volunteers) and I did the underground mine tour with Brian. It was about 1.5 hrs and worth it, the related mining history and process Brian was able to convey really helped me appreciate the early mining days.

The tour has a lot of mining equipment and explains how the whole process works. An excellent stop, children would enjoy also. Should be on the TO DO list!

What a great little spot this is. Just on the edge of town & on top of a hill, this property is loaded with mining history. 3 awesome exhibits to look at packed with cool things.
The staff were just so lovely, very helpful with giving us information about Tennant Creek and the facilities. Great little gift shop too. Would absolutely recommend.
Hot tip- the facility has gone cashless so definitely take a card to pay tour fees / merch

Well there are lots of mining history areas in Australia and this is one of them. BUT - it's a bit better than most and well worth a visit. I mean, what else is there to do in Tennant Creek anyway. We stayed in the caravan park with a two meter fence, with a gate locked at night for our own safety. Enough said, hey.

The lady (I didn't get her name) at the visitor centre was one of the most friendly and helpful people I have met on my trip. You can tell she has a passion for Tennant Creek and I left with information and places to visit. I returned the following day to do the mining tour and was not disappointed. Bob was fantastic and it was a pleasure to hear the stories and imagine what it would have been like to work in the mines. This was a highlight in Tennant Creek and I highly recommend taking one of the tours. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your welcome comments. The Lady's name was Roddy and she is always cheerful and informative. Bob has spent the tour season with us and we are so lucky to have him do tours which he enjoys doing. (He has now returned safely to his home down south as numbers are in the decline with the quiet summer season approaching). We are most appreciative to any ambassadors passing on any positive comments about the Battery Hill Mining Centre and the Tennant Creek VIC. So......thank you once more

Nigel is very informative about all things Tennant Creek and only too willing to help while Brian is a great tour guide through the mine. We found the mine tour very interesting, it’s unfortunate that it will all be closed shortly as the Government withdraws funding. See it while you can

We took a self guided tour as the times didnt suit us while in Tennant Creek, unfortunately. We wandered up the hill and through the buildings with displays. The self guided tour map was easy to read and there was lots to look at.
