The main features of the Rainbow Valley area are the scenic sandstone bluffs and cliffs. These free standing cliffs form part of the James Range, and are particularly attractive in the early morning and late afternoon when the rainbow-like rock bands are highlighted. Access is best in a 4WD vehicle due to sandy patches on the access road. Walks and camping available.

A great spot to do a quick picturesque look into the Australia outback scenery. Amazing colour. Dirt road in off the Stuart Highway for about 7-8km and a bit bumpy in spots, however quite an easy drive in an AWD. Well worth it for some great photos in the mid afternoon sun. Hot though....very hot, so take your water and... More

Were a bit pressed for time to get in and out before sunset - but glad we made the effort. The unsealed road is decent in parts, and sheer washboard in others. I had a 4WD Rav, and it had rained the day before - but I think even a 2WD would have made it at a slow .. VERY... More

Let me tell ya...the drive to Rainbow Valley was no joking business...at least for me. I totally took the big risk to come here. It's far far away and the road turning into the valley was all unsealed, corrugated, sandy and absolutely taxing. And it's very very deep inside into the valley so be prepared for your body to be... 22km of dirt road to a beautiful spot! Highly recommend 4wd. This is a small, quiet nature preserve with no real services or running water. Campsites are available to "rent" on an honor system. We watched the sunset and took some great pics.

The last 22 kms is unsealed road, if it hasn't rained recently then it can be accessible via a 2WD. Bare in mind that it is a bumpy road though and there is a lot of dirt. However once you reach there, preferably in the afternoon you will be awed by how beautiful the natural area is. Great for relaxing... More

I visited here last week with a friend and had a memorable experience. The drive in can be dusty but wont be a problem in a 4x4. The camping spots each have a fire pit and although you cant collect fire wood within the park, there is plenty along the road. We had no one near us so we could... More

It is an amazing site especially during the colder months. The colours between the morning hours and early evening are fantastic. You can camp there and I would suggest you do to see the true colours and atmosphere of it. The dirt road is a bit rough but worth the drive. We will be back

Visited May 21st, 2013 The colors during sunset are so amazing and brilliant, its unbelievable!!! The outback has a couple of beautiful landmarks, but this is a real gem. If you are near, you must really visit it! Please be aware, the about 22km gravel road from the highway is 4WD recommended (and necessary during/after rainfall), but with a normal... More
