What is sold here today has changed with times. A lot of things sold here are now tailored for Chinese tourists. The quality of the jades appears mainly to be of lower too, perhaps an indivation of the depletion of resources. However, I did find a new hiddem gem in the rock painted craftwork annex at the rear of this... More

Came across this shop, went in for a look and spotted the craftsmen making thing from the Jade. Looked over one mans shoulder for a while before he spotted me. Our conversation started and it was interesting to see him doing it and explaining things. A visit to see this could end up you spending some $'s.

We bought a couple scraps of Jade for the kids during our holiday, which were fine for $6 each. Took them up on the offer to drill them to turn them into pendants, for $10 cash each. Don't know what the folks drilling them were on, but the holes were not centered or straight, and made it so that the... More

Visited the shop and bought some jade. Price is reasonable. Vicky, the sales lady was very helpful. Good stop in that area.

We happened to be in the store while it was very empty. Most of the people in the store were actually staff members. We had plenty of time browsing through the items, asking the freindly and helpful staff for advice and watching the carvers at work. All pieces were clearly labelled concerning their origin and so far we did not... More

Went into this store but found it to be very tourist orientated. Hard to know whether a lot of the Pounamu is from New Zealand. some very beautiful pieces of jewellery tho, some probably a little highly priced. I ended up getting mine from a local artist who gets his stone locally and was only a third of the price... More

This place is huge and very exciting when you first arrive in Hokitika because they have a lot of jade carvings and jewellery to offer. Beware of the wording Nz jade, because it is not the same as Pounamu or greenstone! We found this place to be very commercial, overpriced and no where near as good as some of the... More

Hokitika is a really small and peaceful town with nothing much to do, so one of the things you can do is visit the jade stores. Mountain Jade play 2 roles, a jade shop and also a jade factory, which means you can watch live jade carving process for free and look for jade in the shop after that. There... More

Basically a working jade factory where you can watch a demonstration of polishing jade ( we didn't as we have seen this many times before) and buy Jade jewellery at reasonable prices - everything from ear rings ,rings, necklaces ,bracelets, to really grand collarettes .
