A great quiet spot to visit especially if you want to swim in the lake. A good basic DOC campsite and plenty of sandflys.

I didn't intend to visit as it had turned to rain and I wasn't going to get to see the stunning 'sunshine' views, I was going to leave that until my next trip down south. I was pleased I did though. The road was unsealed and narrow (I did a visit after the gorge) but the bush was lovely, I... More

Although the weather wasn't great, we walked around the bush trail, which was absolutely beautiful. The gorge and bridge were a short walk and this is whole area is Mother Nature at her best. Not to be missed. There was wheelchair access to the first lookout point, but it became steep after that.

This area is different from the other NZ hikes that we've done. It's more of a jungle feel, except it's not 100 degrees. We saw the Dorothy Falls which are right off the road (very cool) and hiked for just over an hour on the Lake Kaniere walkway. Typically it's a 3-4 hour walk one way, so we just walked... More

We went a little to late the wind had got up so the lake wasn't clear... i would love to go back and watch the sunrise to see if it makes a difference the recommendations are to go before dawn or at dusk. Wear mosquito spray!

It was a cold, blustery day. Bitterly cold. But even so, the reserve was beautiful.... walking underneath mature natives... just the ticket. Also the odd friendly weka ... nice.

Nice drive but very scary for us as we did not realize how flooded the roads would be with heavy rains the night before. Careful if rainy time. It had dried up by later in the day when we had to return, but was scary in the morning when we had to drive through

Before heading South over the Haast Pass we took a diversion to Lake Kaniere Scenic Reserve.Like so many places in the South Island of New Zealand the scenery is stunning. It is not just more of the same as every attraction has its own characteristics.

We drove, arrived, met lovely people and hung out, then took tips from the locals to keep driving around the Lake past the Falls, to the Hokitika Gorge and back then to the main road. So .. drive around the beautiful Lake, take advantage of a wonderful variety of walks .. enjoy

We visited this on our way back from the Hokitika Gorge. Not well signposted from that end but just follow the Kaniere Rd. There is a section that is unsealed and narrow but not difficult driving. The Dorothy Falls are worth a stop and the road around the lake (sealed once you reach the main camp area ) is very... More
