Shantytown is a leading New Zealand culture and heritage attraction. Made up of over 30 historic buildings it is a faithfully recreated 19th century pioneer town, inspired by the West Coast gold rushes of the 1860s. Highlights include riding the steam train, gold panning, the Beehive store with its range of traditional confectionery and the opportunity to have an old time photo portrait taken as a memento of your visit.

Revisiting after a few years absence. Enjoyed wandering around all the buildings and exhibits and the steam train ride into the bush sawmill. Plenty to do for a whole day out taking your time or you can still get a lot covered in a 2-3 hours. Lots of great photo opportunities.

We enjoyed a couple of hours spent wandering the streets of Shantytown. The steam train was interesting, although not as good as some we have travelled, and the 10 minute holographic movie was fun and informative. The park is small but the displays are well done and adequately inform about the history of the region.

We went - family with kids 10 & 7, and the whole Shantytown is super commercial and feels fake. The bulldog on the front counter needs a cup of happiness , however the lady on the train and gold panning was a lovely representative for Shantytown. Gold Panning was awesome - our kids loved it and ecstatic to come away... More

We chose to visit Shantytown in torrential rain ( because some of it is indoors). I think I counted 20 visitors during the whole of our 2 hour visit which is a shame as the attraction is well worth a visit. A trip on the railway is short but is through dense rainforest with a stop at the sawmill to... More

Interesting and glad I went but not enough to fill a day or entice us to return. The hospital was very interesting

Our family of 3 boys enjoyed their visit to Shantytown and managed to learn some history along the way. Gold panning was fun & there was avoid mix of static & interactive displays. Do allow a couple of hours for the visit to include train ride.

Well maintained township with some interesting old time businesses and services to look at. The steam train ride was fun.

We went to this place on our way from Greymouth to the Glaciers. Loved the steam train. Was great to get an insight into the history of this little town and gold panning. Got to know about Chinese settlement as well. You can get dressed up in old style costume and get urself clicked if u like. Worth a visit!!
