Just outside Whangarei, the three caves make an excellent alternative to Waipu Caves but are sufficiently different to justify visiting both systems. Like Waipu, they are free and entry is not regulated. A leisurely loop track round the reserve, without entering any caves, takes about...More

A great local find - beautifully green, fun for the kids and a good place to explore and climb rocks. in wet conditions you need gumboots, and take a torch (flashlight or headlamp) if you are brave enough to explore the caves. It's undeveloped and...More

Yes caves and glow worms in NZ for free. We only went in the middle cave. It was beautiful at the entrance, looking like fairies should live there. As we went further in we got to clamber around, under and over rocks to get to...More

The caves are amazing. Just remember old shoes as they will get wet and muddy. It is possible to go through some of the caves. There are glow worms so remember to turn of your head lamb and enjoy.

Not a tough caving experience but just hard enough that it isn't as rushed and packed as Waitomo for example. Perfect on a weekday when it was just us. Wear a good pair of boots to get into the tougher places in the cave that...More

If you are near Abbey Caves, it would save a trip to Waitomo. Abbey caves is less touristy, free and you can still see glow worms. :-)
