The Whangarei Heads peninsula is becoming the playground and place to holiday. The 6000 hectare peninsula is a water and nature lover's paradise and a great place to stay on your Northland holiday or weekend break away. The peninsula is ringed with numerous sheltered harbour bays and coves on one side, and expansive white sandy ocean beaches on the other. The waters of Parua Bay, McLeod's, Taurkura, Reotahi and Urquhart's Bays provide numerous family friendly swimming and picnicking spots. On its pacific coastal side the magnificent 5km long Ocean Beach and to the North the popular Taiharuru and Pataua estuaries. Between these coastal fringes lie towering 20 million year old volcanic peaks, "the backbone" of Whangarei Heads with Mt Mania and Mt Lion rising steeply from the sea to over 400 metres. These mountains are surrounded by rich native bush and are abundant with wildlife including noted populations of North Island Brown kiwi.

This is essentially about a beautiful coastal drive from the City through little clusters of houses, small coves and beaches. There is little in Whangarei Heads itself but carry on to Ocean beach for a lovely beach. I understand there several tracks to walk in the area, but the volcanic mountains are quite high so only for the fit.

We had a lovely drive along the Whangarei Heads road and visited a few of the scenic viewpoints. There are plenty of walks to even mke this a day trip.

Something for everyone. Shorter easy hikes or long and hard ones. We did the hike from Ocean Beach up to the old Radar station. Lots of steps so you need to be reasonably fit but what a payoff with views and vegetation. We also did hike to Smugglers but were stopped by some cows once we got close. I'm sure... More

Lots of places to visit here - depending on your interests, plenty of arts and crafts (Saturday markets near Town Basin were great), or easy walks along the waterfront - fully accessible. Museums, quaint cafes - a pleasant surprise.

Don't miss this wondrous place. We went on a long hike (Smuggler's Cove) and enjoyed ourselves so much. The scenery constantly changed, as did the weather, and we thoroughly just soaked it all in. What a beautiful place! Bring water and perhaps some picnic foods and be prepared to get in a good workout while gazing all around at the... More

If I had to choose between the Bay of Islands or the Whangarei Heads to get a taste of the best our northern coastline has to offer, I would choose this every time. Beautiful, uncrowded, laid back and friendly

Enjoyed exploring the coast and amazed the rugged volcanic rim. Lovey, safe beach for the kids and a bonus play ground

The beaches are beautiful with excellent swimming, lovely sand and very clean water. The walking options are numerous with Smugglers Cove being a favourite providing access to another great beach. Fishing in the harbour off the rocks can be very rewarding. Peach Cove is another great track where you may get to see a Robin amongst the native bird population.... More

30-35 minute windy road drive from Whangarei city. We only saw the tavern that opens at 11am on the bay side of the road just before Whangarei heads and two other places to stop for a bite. One is Mt Manaia club where you must be a member or guest of a member. The third is where we stopped for... More
