A unique experience including the walk down the underground tunnel to get to the elevator. Once at the top the views over Whanganui & the river are great, even better if you climb either one of the towers at the top.

After a short walk from the township, you enter a tunnel some 230m in length that goes straight into the side of a hill, where you get into a 98 year old lift. There is a lift operator who charges you $2 each way for the trip. The lift is quite fascinating given its age. It takes you to the... More

What's not to like, a ride in a rickety elevator after an endless tunnel... but good views especially if you then head up the war memorial tower straight afterwards.... and you can walk down the steps to the river side after it all.

One of only two working elevators in the southern hemisphere. Enjoy a walk along the 205m entrance tunnel, then up the elevator to get an amazing view of historical Whanganui River and the central town area. The elevator, built in 1919, is listed by the Historic Places Trust as a Category 1 facility. It is a slightly bumpy ride, but... More

This is a great little piece of history. The Durie Hill Elevator is effectively a mode of "public transport", and in NZ, this is completely unique. You walk into the hillside quite some metres in what looks like a bit like an old train tunnel . The elevator is rough and rickety, probably due to it's age and technology, but... More

A wonderful little step back in history that doesn't take much time. If you are stopping, or even passing through Whanganui you must take a couple of minutes for this unique experience. From the entrance to the elevator and then the little windy staircase to the top deck for a great view of the town you won't be disappointed. Very... More

We walked through the tunnel and up the elevator had a look around, was raining but the views were beautiful perfect 360 views. On that note decided we would walk down. Today we have sore calves amazing steps. So glad we went and worth a visit.
