You can jet, canoe, and kayak on this river, which was navigable by steamboat a century ago. Drive up or down the windy river road (about 10km unsealed) to see an old flour mill and mission posts. There's still a paddle steamer down at Whanganui...More

We took the gravel road down from Pipiriki, but due to the heavy brush alongside the road, were unable to see the river except in a few spots (& not a particularly pretty river at that).

We walk from our hotel to the Wanganui river then to Kowhai park. It's nice that locals keep their river central to tourism. Good idea. The river looked great against the blue sky. A little muddy, reminds me of melbourne

The Bridge to Nowhere is an interesting part of NZ history and while challenging to access with a kayak when busy would provide some diversity including environmental science aspects as the water underneath the bridge itself... More
