Old Dubbo Gaol is a state heritage listed must see. This remarkably complete and intact gaol operated for 119 years from 1847 to 1966 and is still nestled in the main street of Dubbo. This set of 19th and 20th century gaol buildings create a pocket in time, and the experiences within brings history to life. This regional gaol is representative of powerful, surprising and dark moments in Australian prison history. We house important collections such as the hangman's kit and gallows, and unforgettable experiences such as the dark cells and the bird's-eye view from the watchtower. With guided tours, night tours, and theatrical experiences on offer, the Old Dubbo Gaol is a rare piece of history open to explore.

We stayed in Dubbo to break our drive, as well as to go to the Zoo. We had some time spare in the afternoon so hit the main street of Dubbo. By chance we came across the Old Dubbo Gaol and enjoyed it immensely. The history is great, but the association behind the Gaol has done a fantastic job restoring... More

I visited the gaol for a twilight tour with my two sons (10 and 11). The tour was interactive with my kids thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to role play. The tour guides/actors were fabulous and highly entertaining! A great tour in the heart of Dubbo easily accessible and well worth the fee.

Well worth a couple of hours exploring just how difficult life must have been for prisoners. Only needs an hour or two.

A look into the past with a tour of the old Dubbo Goal. The site is very well preserved and provides a good commentary of the past. Worth the visit.

A great experience for the whole family. We arrived and were lucky enough to be just on time for a quick performance of an escapee and guard. They pulled children from the crowd to participate- including our kids. Only need an hour to see the entire jail, worth the trip.

Overall this was a great visit and something I really recommmed if coming to visit Dubbo. The presentation of the grounds were immaculate. The stories you hear about the inmates and the ins and outs of daily life was pretty cool. Im not sure if tours are offered but this would be a great addition. The real life actors were... More

One of the better gaol museums in Australia. Interesting to hear the stories of the previous residents of this institution. Listening to in-mates' struggles and tribulations. If you're into history, particularly of Australia, you'll find something to keep you entertained in your visit.

We went for the twilight tour and the kids loved it. The characters were well played and involved a good amount of participation from the visitors. We did go back the next day to take a look at the parts that were closed during the twilight tour and were fortunate enough to catch another of the character performances.
