we did a guided tour and our guide Matt was amazing. We learnt so much from him exploring the island. You can go to the island independently but it really enhanced our experience to have a guide with us

Take the little boat across from Golden Bay on Stewart Island and you can spend anything up from an hour or two to the whole day on Ulva Island. There are well-kept paths all round the island which give you the chance to see (and hear) all the many species of birds which live here. The island is a "pest-free"... More

We had a great time following our guide, Ulva, on a nature walk. We were able to see and photograph many native birds. Also learned about the island's history, the brush and trees and some of the sea life. Well worth the time and money!

Fantastic, heaps birds and saw a kiwi. Tracks excellent and well signposted. Recommend a day trip as it allows plenty time to explore.

It is a good bird watching haven. Take water and a packed lunch to linger longer. The forest is lovely but I've seen bigger trees in Tasmania. $20 boat ride is a bit expensive.

The New Zealand Department of Conservation must really love Ulva Island - they care for it so well. The tracks are beautifully maintained and pristine. There's bird life everywhere. All kinds of bird life and they're not shy - especially the weka. A really lovely place that's a pleasure to visit. We spent four hours there and could have stayed... More

Do not miss this experience. The island is being re-established back to its origins of fauna and flora the way it was 1300 years ago when the first Maoris settled on Stewart island. Like so may of New Zealand's native forests it began to be chopped down but fortunately that was stopped. Predators invaded and so much of the plant... More

We travelled to Ulva Island from Oban for a day trip and guided nature walk through the bush and along the seashore. Had picnic lunch on board the boat
