Stewart Island Experience operates daily ferry service between Bluff and Stewart Island all year around. Stewart Island is New Zealand's ultimate eco-tourism destination and the location of Rakiura National Park. During the one hour ferry crossing, keep a look out for the Mollymawks (Albatross) that often follow the vessel. Daily coach connections operate between Bluff and Invercargill, and in summer also to Te Anau and Queenstown (summer only).

Not for the weak stomachs! Our crossing was on a relatively calm day but the fast cat still rocked and rolled. Expertly navigated by the captain. A more difficult day would be interesting.

Probably everyone says something like this! I think we were lucky that the sea was relatively calm. It felt like being at an adventure park on one of the water attractions. There boat was certainly moving around quite a bit. However the seats are comfy enough and the space you sit it in quite small so I felt safe and... More

"Splashy" was the word the skipper used and yes it was a bit rough but not too bad. Felt very safe the entire way. Staff helpful and concerned for young traveller in front of us who was feeling seasick. I had heard horror stories about this trip but was very pleasantly surprised by how easy and comfortable it was.

We had a good trip both ways and enjoyed the views from the ferry. We got an extra hour on the Island as there was a delay but it was no hardship having another drink in the sun at the hotel overlooking the bay. Good for taking photos of both the Island and Bluff.

We traveled from Bluff to Stewart Island in very rough seas, but felt in safe hands with our captain. The ferry was well maintained and our luggage was stowed in waterproof containers. Only gripe is that on the Stewart Island end, once our luggage was taken off the boat, the containers were opened outside in the rain resulting in wet... More

This was great fun and the staff are all very friendly and informative. A few members of my party became unwell on the first crossing sue to 35knot winds causing severe waves. I loved it. The staff were very attentive to anyone feeling unwell and couldn't have done more.

Been told all kinds of tales about this trip but we couldn't have asked for better. Smooth fast trip with places of interest pointed out. Friendly staff very helpful. Booked wrong date and they were very kind and rebooked for right day at no xtra cost. Thanks ferry people you were great.
