I wonder how many people drive into this small town disturbing the peace looking for the Kingston Flier. The tracks are well overgrown, there are only a few old carriages and it looked to me out of use many many years, my guide book published only this year does not recognise the fact!! A long trip for nothing , but... More

By the time we visited the place in April 2015, there was hardly anything left at the place, which is a shame. Still, lake Wakatipu‬ and its surrounding are beautiful and there's a nearby waterfall if you want to go on a short tracking adventure.

It had always been my dream to ride on the Kingston Flyer, and I had hoped that it would remain open and working long enough for me to visit during my trip to New Zealand. That was not to be, and although I knew in advance that it was no longer working, I just had to go and look for... More

Rode on this fabulous train a few months before it was forced off the track with a cracked boiler. Standing outside at the front of the carriage directly behind the engine a tender, smoke, soot and steam blowing in your face was an incredible experience. The station and little cafe was beautifully kept and the entire railway had great potential.... More

We drove down to look at what was happening only to find rolling stock and two lovely steam locomotives going to waste in a fenced off area. The station building is festering away too. We understand that the attraction is currently for sale but the owner has turned down some offers and seems to be holding out for rather more.... More

Took a lovely lakeside drive up to Kingston in the hope of riding the Kingston Flyer ... It's definitely over. Lovely little town though and friendly people, but the different train areas look like they have been totally disregarded

Although we new the flyer was closed permanently (the business is for sale) we visited to look at the buildings and rolling stock. We had taken a ride on it 20 years ago so such a shame that it's not operating. Do hope that someone can come up with the money!

A unique and very enjoyable experience. We saw it first time in 2009 then in 2011. Unfortunately it is closed now. Hope it gets going soon.

We stopped here on the chance they might be open but they were not. According to their web site, they will be closed for all of 2013 and 2014. To bad because it sounded like fun.

On 29 April, we stopped at Kingston, a very small town on the bottom of Lake Wakatipu. We were lucky enough to catch the last Kingston Flyer steamtrain trip for the season. We travelled 1st class in our own stateroom with leather seats and a table and at their lovely Station cafe we bought our own lunch to eat along... More
