Nugget Point was the highlight. Try and get there early before the buses and while the morning light gives wonderful photo opportunities.

We were touring the Catlins on August 8 and 9, 2018 and among the places we went to see is the Nugget Point lighthouse which is reached after leaving the car in a small parking lot and continuing on a path for three kilometers round...More

Over 5 days this drive was spectacular. Wild and calm oceans, green like you would not believe, spectacular lakes and so on. The Catlins are a hidden gem with so many unspoilt spots to stop and get photos. The roads were fine, very little traffic...More

We travelled different parts of this route and were disappointed that we couldn't stop to enjoy it more. We took most of the day driving from Dunedin to Invercargill so that was ok, so don't rush it.

I wish we had planned to do the drive over 2 days, so I could've stopped off at a few more places (only did nugget point and purakaunui falls), but overall, the drive was easy (but long....) and very scenic.

Not the most direct, but certainly the most scenic way around the bottom of the South Island. Must make sure you have allowed the time to stop at several of the tourist sites along the journey.

The Catlins are nice, and the coastal drive is very scenic. Don't miss out the famous Bluff oysters!

Good questions. We drove this route in October, 2017. I cannot advise you regarding the weather in July, but there are no significant mountains so I would be surprised if snow were to be a problem. The road itself is... More
