Over 5 days this drive was spectacular. Wild and calm oceans, green like you would not believe, spectacular lakes and so on. The Catlins are a hidden gem with so many unspoilt spots to stop and get photos. The roads were fine, very little traffic...More

We travelled different parts of this route and were disappointed that we couldn't stop to enjoy it more. We took most of the day driving from Dunedin to Invercargill so that was ok, so don't rush it.

I wish we had planned to do the drive over 2 days, so I could've stopped off at a few more places (only did nugget point and purakaunui falls), but overall, the drive was easy (but long....) and very scenic.

Not the most direct, but certainly the most scenic way around the bottom of the South Island. Must make sure you have allowed the time to stop at several of the tourist sites along the journey.

I had read somewhere that this was in the top 10 drives in the world. I am pleased I have done it, but it’s not that good, and I don’t need to do it again. However, we did most of it in quite grey, overcast...More

Maybe it was because we had an overcast day, but I just don’t get why this drive is so highly rated. For spectacular scenery, driving through Central Otago is much better in my opinion. Yes, we saw waterfalls and lighthouses and sea lions but it...More

We travelled from Christchurch to Dunedin to Queenstown via Invercargill and Bluff on the Southern Scenic Route. The Catlins scenic drive is great. We stopped off at the Purkauni Falls, Oamuru penguin colony (need to go early evening), Moeraki Boulders, Curio Bay and Nugget Point...More

Fantastic trip from Dunedin to invercargill. Heaps of places to stop and look at. Walks long and short to waterfalls. Fascinating small (and not so small) towns. Fairly easy drive if you are not in a hurry. We took 6 1/2 hours - but that...More

The Catlins are nice, and the coastal drive is very scenic. Don't miss out the famous Bluff oysters!

Having driven extensively around the South Island, if you wish to travel from point to point and stop in between to enjoy the beautiful scenic places then I would suggest you don’t attempt to drive more then 250km per day... More

Good questions. We drove this route in October, 2017. I cannot advise you regarding the weather in July, but there are no significant mountains so I would be surprised if snow were to be a problem. The road itself is... More
