The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From the comfort of world class carriages you'll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech rainforest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature state award winning carriages including panoramic side and sky-view windows, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, and open air viewing decks.

The TranzAlpine operates a daily return service throughout the year.

The train has been revamped in recent years and is clean and comfortable with audio commentary. the cafe car has some seats in it as well and has a variety of food such as pies. The coffee is not great but they do have a limited selection of wines. The views are splendid and it takes about 4.5 hours to... More

The scenery on this journey is absolutely breathtaking. If you are heading towards Greymouth this is a very good travel option. Even for those staying in Christchurch it makes a good day trip, leaving in the morning, having lunch in Greymouth, then returning in the afternoon

Completed the train trip during winter (June) it had been snowing and the scenery was awesome. Got trip the train was exciting, remember doing it when I was a kid traveling to Greymonth for the holidays on the farm. Very relaxing, smooth traveling. We stayed for a couple of nights in Greymonth, my birthplace so a special place. If you... More

Fantastic way to see the sights of the South Island. Beautiful scenery and awesome sites. Amazing history concerning the railroad, viaducts and rural towns. Nice selection of food on board but recommend taking snacks. There is an informative and interactive screen coupled with a headset that lets you know the history of the section you are travelling through

I have done this trip several times in both summer and winter. Definitely a worthwhile trip. Fantastic scenery from the comfort of your comfortable train seat with large Windows. You can go there and back in a day or stay overnight in Greymouth or catch a bus once you arrive in Greymouth and head down to the glaciers.

The train was easy to get to and board and was clean and comfortable. The views were spectacular. There is an fabulous audio that provides commentary throughout the journey on what you are seeing, including the physical changes in environment and area history, which really made the trip meaningful.

This is the best way to get to Christchurch from the Glacier Region (or vice-versa) as the train is so comfortable and has all the amenities required for the 4.5 hour journey. Additionally, the view is a million bucks and makes the entire experience worth-while. The train has a cafe on board serving some delectable pick-up food and coffee/hot chocolate,... More

The TranzAlpine Train was amazing. The inclusion of the Observation Deck (Open Carriage) added to the experience. I spent most of the trip in this carriage. A camera is a must have on this adventure as the scenery and the mountain ranges are beautiful. If wanting to go one way, the trip is 5 hours. With return it is a... More

For all my overseas trips I use the rail system and taking this one was quite nice specially with the open air section. It was fun standing out there and getting great pics. Even when it was raining in a few areas it was still fun standing out there and getting pics. would recommend this travelling from Christchurch to Greymouth
