- Ken CBottesford, United Kingdom534 contributionsQuiet and beautifulThis is a large green area with easy walking pathways which take you through this beautiful area of Sydney. The harbour waters lap up against the wall as it traces the bay. Lots of trees and plants to see. There is a cafe within the gardens to rest and enjoy a drink. You could easily spend 3 hours here but we visited twice to break it up. Worth it.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 December 2022
- HahnTravelsLiverpool, Australia1,213 contributionsBeautiful GardensVery peaceful at any time of day. Loved the rose garden, the hydrangeas and the native gardens. The many views of the Avon River are worth the effort. Try and locate the first tree planted, the Albert Edward Oak planted in 1863 to commemorate the marriage of Price Albert and Princess Alexandra of Denmark. Relax and enjoy!Visited December 2022Written 19 December 2022
- rememrSingapore, Singapore951 contributionsGarden in the city centerLovely garden near Christchurch city center, about 15min walk from where we came from. Easy to walk around with a café within the vicinity. There are also guided tram tours if you have more time; walking is faster.Visited November 2022Written 26 December 2022
- JEBLLB233 contributionsBeautiful setting for a walkAs keen gardeners we love strolling round places like this and picking up ideas for our own patch. It was a lovely day when we went and we spent a large part of the afternoon there. Entry is free. At one point we stopped to buy ice-creams and were pleasantly surprised by the price of the cones compared to England and the size of them. I had the boysenberry which was delicious. There is a gift shop with a mainly botanical theme and some gorgeous items but it is quite expensiveVisited October 2022Written 28 December 2022
- sainter352016Melbourne, Australia25 contributionsBeautiful way to spend a couple of hoursSpent a lovely few hours in the Christchurch Gardens. I thought they were some of the best gardens I have been to. It was a beautiful sunny mid 20s day and it was relatively quiet. The herbaceous border is stunning. If you are a gardener or just like waking in beautiful gardens give it a go.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 January 2023
- Kait42 contributionsIndoor Gardens were fantasticThe gardens are in a fantastic spot. Only ten minutes walk from our hotel. The gardens are well set out. Lots of look at and discover. The fountain is fantastic and great to have little signs to read about the history. The edible garden gave us some great ideas. We stopped for coffee before heading to the playground. Not a lot on offer for older children but brilliant for younger children. We loved seeing the wildlife. A highlight for us was the indoor gardens. They are amazing and we were surprised how much there was to see.Visited October 2022Travelled with familyWritten 3 January 2023
- ChallisPalaceGlenroy, Australia6 contributionsAn oasis in the middle of a city! What a delight to discover the Christchurch Botanic Gardens with large shady trees, interesting plant collections and beautiful conservatories. We took the hop-on-hop-off tour and gained a deeper appreciation of the gardens especially the stories behind significant trees and the importance of the collections from a global perspective. During our wanders, I particularly enjoyed the NZ trees and plants which almost feels like you're in the bush in the middle of the city! Well done to the Curator, the head gardeners and the Friends of Christchurch Botanic Gardens for keeping this wonderful garden looking fantastic!Visited December 2022Written 9 January 2023
- BriNew Zealand16 contributionsIncredibly Beautiful Gardens. The Botanic Gardens offer a wide range of gardens, from the sweet-smelling and vivid Rose Gardens, to the serene Water Garden. As well as the beautiful plants, the gardens also offer many artistic sculptures, and plenty of areas perfect for picnics. Definitely have a look around if you’re in Christchurch!Visited January 2023Written 24 January 2023
- Ron MMenasha, Wisconsin395 contributionsAbsolute Must Do!This is the most amazing set of botanical gardens that I have ever seen. From giant Sequoias to herbs, from roses to hisbiscus, from cacti to a weather station, this place has everything. And..it is huge! We spent a couple hours just wandering and could easily to it again day after day. It is quiet, clean, extremely well kept and safe. It’s free and easily to walk to from the city center. You must see this.Visited January 2023Written 26 January 2023
- C79-Family25 contributionsBeautiful gardenWhat a beautiful place. So much history - but hard to keep track of all the different species. We were able to have one of the tenured guides give us a tour which included history of the gardens and the species. Many trees that came from other places. Very interesting. Many flowers were past their prime due to the time of year, but still very enjoyable.Visited January 2023Written 29 January 2023

Beautiful gardens! Many serene walking trails, ducks, flowers, trees. It is well laid out, there are maps at regular intervals, they do offer guided tours but we didn't take one. The cafe is nice and there is a gift shop on site. There are conservatories as well but they close at 4pm (?) and the gardens stay open til dusk so if you're there late in the day you won't be able to get in.

We visited these gardens in early spring before the floral displays were at their best. However, we enjoyed just walking all round them and relaxing in this peaceful haven.

After a busy, travel day, navigating the Christchurch construction zones, and a hotel laundry stint, I exhaled by strolling through the Gardens and everything was perfect once again...
The beauty of these Gardens (not particularly a flower guy), is that they allow anyone to simply "be" in the moment, take in whatever you choose at your pace, smile at others doing the same, and stay for as long as you want.
If I had a guidebook or a guide, I imagine that more information and facts would have been placed into my mind, but I am very happy with the joy that I experienced by doing it exactly in the manner that I just described.

Beautiful selection of trees and plants! Could spend hours walking through to see everything. A lovely place to spend time. There are a few signs around, but also information in the centre where the cafe is, including some interactive stuff for kids. In particular I liked the NZ section, and the twisted tree!

Lovely gardens to walk around in central Christchurch. The rose garden in bloom was a particularly beautiful place and the scents were amazing. Worth a wander.

Well laid and easily accessible from cbd. Enjoyed simply strolling around and discovering the variety of plants and trees. Small but pleasant cactii and orchid exhibitions. Visitors centre and cafe looked good

I loved the city, and I was so pleased to be staying right outside Hagley park which was a beautiful place to walk thru every day, and the botanic gardens were great to see. What I loved about the park the most was the beautiful trees throughout.
The quake museum is definitely worth a visit, as it shows the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake, and the riverside market is a must, as you can get every type of food you want there. I just love the layout of the place, and am heading back toNew Zealand in January 2024, and my starting base is 3days in Christchurch before a couple of months around the South Island.

Just beautiful. So relaxing to roam around the garden and enjoy the smells of the flowers and fresh air. Even as some of the flowers are yet to
bloom, there are still so many to enjoy.

A lot of plants and trees, but the garden will probably be much more beautiful in the spring or summer. In the wintertime - when we visited - there was really not much to see.

This is one of my personal favourite places in Christchurch! It is beautiful, there's so much to see and do, lots of trees for kids to play in, cafes to sit and relax in. September through to November is my personal favourite time to go and walk around because it is Spring and the rose garden blooms early November! Lovely to walk around in :):)

Yes I believe you will find it a worth while experience 99.9% of the trees in NZ are evergreen
I am bringing a group of 45 late 70's early 80's folks to Christchurch the first week of May 2020.
We only have a quick afternoon there.
Can I squeeze Botanical Gardens. Quake City and Cathedral Square stops in.
Am i choosing the right things for this time of year? Wondering if the Botanical Gardens will be worth it?

Botanic gardens took me a full day. But if you want to have a nice lunch there is a nice cafe in the middle. And the heritage rose garden is beautiful. You could do it quicker than we did - but it’s worth it. Cathedral square is literally the courtyard of a church, so it doesn’t take long. If you go to the gardens is might be worth having a look at the old University. It is a beautiful old building with cafes now, right across from the gardens.

We will be visiting Christchurch in January. Will there be a significant number of plants in bloom at that time? Thank you

Sorry only just saw our question. Yes definitely and a huge beautiful rose garden all out in bloom.
Any particular full bloom flowers in mid March?

More than likely there will be begonias is the greenhouse in flower. There could be several other plants in bloom depending on what the gardeners have been planting in some of the rotational beds.

hello,
please let me know where exactly is the free car parking located. Please help with the street name. Are there enough parking spaces or its very limited.
Thank you
Thank you

You can get to the car park off Armagh St near the start of Park Tce and the end of Rolleston Avenue. You can drive through the park passed the tennis courts on the right and on to the car park on the left under the trees near the children's playground which is on the other side of the pedestrian bridge over the Avon River. It is quite a big car park and during the week it is usually easy to find a car park sometimes on a nice sunny weekend the carpark fills up. If there are festivals it becomes impossible to get a park.

Hello, we will be visiting Christchurch Botanic Gardens on or about 23rd April, 2017. Please advise if there are any autumn leaves color to see?
Thanks
I work at the Gardens, and yes, the Gardens are looking spectacular at the moment. Full of Autumn colours...dress warmly.
We are driving campervan to the garden, is there any campervan parking allocated, any charges?

The parking was free at the Botanical gardens, with many parking places and most of them large enough to accomodate a camper van. We saw many there when we visited.

Please post signs or warn visitors in the car park, we had window broken in car and valuables taken that were not in plain view, would suggest surveillance.
Hi...I'm very sorry to hear about your experience. I will pass on your comments to the manager at the Gardens.
