Had read about the museum in tourist brouchers but didn't expect it to be such a treasure. From colonial cottages and fittings to priceless Maori artefacts the collection is extensive and engaging.

The staff here certainly went the extra mile with their explanations. They even made us a (free!)cup of tea. An interesting experience for me was to feel a minor earth tremor during our visit.

This is out of the way, remote and beautiful Okains Bay with an amazing museum that really has a world class collection. It is a gem and way off the beaten path.

A real surprise, a long way from anywhere, but worth a visit and a walk/drive around the bays. About 20 minutes rive from Akaroa.
